DEFINITION AND THEORY

Noise

Unwanted sound (including vibration) which can

cause annoyance, interrupt conversation,
disturb people and in extreme condition can
cause physical damage
All noise level are expressed in term of index L 10
hourly or L10 (18-hour) dB(A)

Calculation of Road
Traffic Noise

STAGE 1
Divide road into segments
There are 4 segments :
Segment S (south)
Segment W (west)
Segment N (north)
Segment E (east)

flow
Correction for traffic speed and heavy
vehicle
Correction for gradien G
Correction for road surface condition

Stage 2

Base on equation (page 40) :

a) Basic Noise Level L10 (18-hour) = 29,1+10 Log10 Q dB (A)
= 29,1+10 Log10 20000
= 72,11 dB (A) or 72,1 dB (A)

Stage 2
b) Heavy Vehicle (p%)
Which
: V = 60 km/jam
p = 15 %
Base on equation (page 41)
Correction = 33 Log10 (V + 40 +
500/V)
+10Log10 (1+ 5p/V)
68,8 dB(A)
= 33 Log10 (60 + 40 +
500/60)
+ 10Log10 (1+ 5 x 15/60)
68,8
= 1,87 dB (A) +1,9 dB (A)

Stage 2
c) Correction for Gradient (G %)
(Page 6, Line 15)
Because of flat road (G = 0 %)

d) Correction for road surface condition

(Page 7, Line 16.1)
Impervious road surface dan
V < 75 km/jam
Correction = -1,0 dB (A)

Stage 2

L10 S = L10 (18-jam) + Correction for

traffic speed and heavy vehicle +
Correction for gradien G + Correction
for road surface condition

L10 S

= 72,11 + 1,87 + 0 + (-1,0)

= 72,98 dB (A) +73 dB (A)

a) Correction for distance

d = 9 meter (d 4)
h = 3,5 meter
Using chart 7 page 44
or
Base on equation
d = (d+3,5)2 + h2 1/2
= (9+3,5)2 + 3,52 1/2
= 12,98 meter
Correction

= -10 Log10 (d/13,5) dB (A)

= -10 Log10 (12,98/13,5) dB (A)
= 0,17 dB (A) + 0,2 dB (A)

Stage 3

Stage 3
b) Correction for ground absorption
Assuming that in juction the intervening Pavement Cover
(I) is non- absorbent, (I = 0). (Line 20.1
c) Correction for potential barrier
There is no intervening obstruction , correction for potential
barrier is 0 (line 21).
Total correction of propagation for segmen S
= 0,2 dB (A) + 0 + 0
= +0,2 dB (A)

Stage 4

a)Correction for facade (line 26.1)

1 meter in front of facade
=
+2,5 dB (A)
b)Correction for angle of reflection
(line 26.2 )
Angle of reflection from opposite
facade building = 148 38 = 110
Correction = +1,5 (/) dB (A)
= +1,5 (110/148) dB (A)
= 1,11 dB (A)

Stage 4

c) Correction for angle of view (Chart

= 10 Log10 (/180) dB

= 10 Log10 (148/180) dB (A)
= -0,85 dB (A) atau -0,9 dB (A)

Stage 4

Total correction of site lay

out for Segmen S :

= +2,7 dB (A)

STAGE 5
COMBINING NOISE LEVEL

Stage 5

Noise level for each segment:

Noise level for Segment S :
+73 dB (A) + 0,2 dB (A) + 2,7 dB (A)

= 75,9 dB (A)

Noise level for Segment W :

+70,3 dB (A) 1,9 dB (A) 3,7 dB (A)

= 64,7 dB (A)

Noise level for Segment N :

+68,3 dB (A) 1,0 dB (A) 5,0 dB (A)

= 62,3 dB (A)

Noise level for Segment E :

+72,6 dB (A) 1,9 dB (A) 4,3 dB (A)

= 66,4 dB (A)

Stage 5

Stage 5
Chart 11 and equation (i) page 49
Segment S contributes the biggest noise level so this
segment become parameter in Combining noise level.

Segment S to E

S-E

= 75,9 66,4

= +9,5 dB(A)

LS-W = 10 Log10[1+AntiLog10(-/10)] dB(A)

Combining noise level:

Ltotal

= 75,9 + 0,318 + 0,186 + 0,462

= +76,866 dB(A)
= +77 dB(A)

Stage 5
Using equation (ii) page 49
Segment S
AntiLog10 (Ls/10) = AntiLog10
Segment W
AntiLog10 (Ls/10) = AntiLog10
Segment N
AntiLog10 (Ls/10) = AntiLog10
Segment E
AntiLog10 (Ls/10) = AntiLog10

(75,9/10)

= 38904514,5

(64,7/10)

= 2951209,227

(62,3/10)

= 1698243,652

(66,4/10)

= 4365158,322

Combining level noise (ii), hal 49 :

L combining = 10Log10 (38904514,5 + 2951209,227 + 1698243,652 +
4365158,322)
= 76,807 dB (A)
= +77 dB (A)

CONCLUSION
1. Predicted value of L10 (18-hour) is 77 dB(A).
2. This case shows that the major contribution to the overall
predicted noise level comes from the noise segment which
actually passes the reception point (segment S).
3. The correction for angle of view generally reducing the
significance of the other segments in this calculation.
4. The combined contribution to the overall noise level from
segments W,E and N is only 0.9 dB(A).
