The translation of idiomatic expressions

in publicistic texts (on basis of the


articles from periodic publications)

The aim of the diploma paper is


to analyze the structural and
semantic functions of idiomatic units
in publicistic texts paying attention to
the national peculiarity of idioms and
the ways of their rendering into
Ukrainian.

The topicality of our work


lies in the investigation of the
functional and semantic
peculiarities of different types of
idioms used in publicistic style

An idiom is a word or phrase which means


something different from its literal
meaning.
Idiom is a group of words in a fixed order that
have a particular meaning that is different
from the meanings of each word on its own:
to kick the bucket-to die;
to hit the roof-to get overexcited;
a dead meat-the one who is good for nothing

Vinogradov's classifications
phraseological fusions(to rain cats and dogs,
dead meat, a fine kettle of fish;
phraseological unities (to throw mud at smb., make
a mountain out of a molehill, to put a spoke in
smb.'s wheel)
phraseological combinations ( a bosom friend, to
have a narrow escape, Adam's apple).

Korunets classification:
verb idioms- spill the beans, to go bananas, to
keep the house;
noun-idioms- a bone of discord, Jack of all
trades;
Substantivised phraseological units: big card,
the Trojan horse;
Adverb- idioms- by and again, now and again
Adjectives comparatives - as cunning as fox

The sources of idiom origin:


work and technology( on the same wavelength);
farm animals (take the bull by the horns);
transport (in the same boat);
sports and entertainment (play the second
fiddle);
literature and history(a burnt child dreads the
fire;
feelings and emotions (in high spirits,
heartbroken)

The usage of idioms in publicistic style

Absolute equivalent
Sooner or later they will have to realize
that this is a blind alley and that they need
to rethink they own strategies.

Conclusion:
a variety of idioms with different semantics are
used in publicistic style;
they have different connotations and structural
peculiarities;
The main transformations used in rendering
idioms are addition, replacement and sense
development;
the most productive ways of idiom translation
are partial equivalent and descriptive translation.
