MARBURG VIRUS

By: Epiphany

What is the Marburg Virus?

Marburg virus is an infectious disease that is
extremely deadly. There is no known cure for the
disease. The virus attacks the body quickly and death
usually occur rapidly between 8-9 days. The disease
spreads from close contact with the bodily fluids such
as blood, secretions, saliva, as well as through eating
meat of non-domesticated animals (bush meat), skin
contact, and contaminated injection equipment.

What are the signs and symptoms of disease?

Severe headache, severe malaise, high fever, watery

diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, extreme
lethargy, bleeding from nose, gums and vagina, as
well as spontaneous bleeding from venipuncture
sites.

What

are

the

causes

of

the

disease?

Prolonged exposure to (caves and mines inhabited by)

Rousettus bat colonies.

Is

the

disease

fatal(deadly)?

What

is

the

mortality

rate?

The disease has an average of 88% mortality rate. It

is extremely deadly. Death usually occurs between 89 days after appearance of symptoms.

How does the disease spread among humans?

The spread of the Marburg virus can go range from

via human-to-human such as contacts with the
infected blood, secretions, organs, and other bodily
fluids.Transmission of the disease can also happen
because of health-care workers,transmission via
contaminated injection equipment or through needlestick injuries is associated with more severe disease,
rapid deterioration, and, possibly, a higher fatality
rate.

What

can

be

done

to

stop

the

spread

of

the

disease

in

community?

Avoid areas of known Marburg outbreaks, wash hands

frequently, avoid trying to buying or eating any wild
animals sold in local markets.Try not to have any
contact with infected people, dont handle the
remains carelessly, have an organized procedure to
bury the remains.

What can individuals do to protect themselves from the disease?

Start off by washing your hands frequently, avoid

areas that have an outbreak of the Marburg virus, and
find out about current epidemics at the by checking
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
website.

How is this disease medically treated?

There is no specific vaccine or cure for the disease.

But the patient can be stabilized with medical help.
Like, need of intravenous fluids or oral rehydration
with solutions containing electrolytes.

Is there any way to prevent individuals from catching the disease?

Preventive measures against Marburg virus infection

arent well defined because transmission from wildlife
to humans remains an area of ongoing research. A
way to prevent MHF is to avoid fruit bats and sick
non-human primates in central Africa. Barrier nursing
techniques should be used to prevent direct physical
contact with the patient. Precautions include wearing
of protective gowns, gloves and masks. The patient is
met with strict isolation afterwards.Sterilization or
proper disposal of needles, equipment and patient

What are two to three important facts about the disease?

-Marburg Hemorrhagic fever is in the same family as

Ebola haemorrhagic fever. (Filoviridae family)
-Outbreaks and sporadic cases have been reported in
Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, South
Africa, Zimbabwe, Germany, Netherlands, Uganda
and US.
-The case fatality rate for MHF is between 23-90%
