NOISE
POLLUTION

INTRODUCTION
Noise Pollution is any unwanted or disturbing sound.
(US EPA)

The sound pressure level is measured in

decibels (dB).

INTRODUCTION
Sound becomes unwanted when it either interferes with
normal activities such as sleeping, conversation, or disrupts
or diminishes ones quality of life.
The fact that you cant see, taste or smell it may help
explain why it has not received as much attention as other
types of pollution, such as air pollution, or water pollution.

HOUSING AREA
(NEIGHBOURHOOD)

INDUSTRIAL AREA
INSFRASTRUCTURE AREA

NEIGHBOURHOOD NOISE
Any type of noise that
is from residential
premises that might be
considered
unreasonable with
regard to its volume,
intensity, and duration,
and the time, place and
other circumstances in
which it is emitted.

SOURCE OF NEIGHBOURHOOD
NOISE
The playing of loud music and noisy parties
Barking dogs
Renovation work (hammering, using power

tools)
Burglar alarms and car alarms
Religion and culture ceremony

INDUSTRIAL NOISES
Industrial noise is
the
high intensity of
sound produced
by machines in
various industries,
mills and factories.

Four main categories:

1. Product Fabrication
Eg: Metal Fabrication
(Cutting, shearing, pressing and riveting of
metal).

4. Processing
-Eg: oil refinery.
-Major sources are furnaces, heat exchangers,
pumps, compressors and steam leaks.

2. Product Assembly
- High level of higher frequency noise due to
operation of electric and pneumatic wrenches.

3. Power Generation
-Produced by turbine generators and air
compressors.
-Eg: fans and blowers.

SOURCE OF INDUSTRIAL NOISE

The sound produced at every stage by various aspects such
as:
Welding
Drilling
Operation of cranes
Grinding
Blowing
Others
High noise level common in petrochemical, steel industries,

mines and thermal power station etc.

INFRASTRUCTURE NOISES
Infrastructure based on Environmental Quality
(Prescribed Activities) (Environmental Impact Assessment)
Order 1987 Schedule.

a) Construction of hospitals with outfall into beachfronts use

recreational purposes.

b) Industrial estate development for medium and heavy ind

covering an area of 50 hectares or more.

c) Construction of expressways
d) Construction of national highways.
e) Construction of new townships.

SOURCE OF INFRASTRUCTURE
NOISE

Heavy equipment and machinery

Demolition work, site preparation work, repair

work, building maintenance, pilling works
Vehicles

Entering and leaving a construction site

People

People shouting to communicate and radios turned

up too loud

EFFECT OF NOISE POLLUTION

People

-hearing loss
-sleep disturbance
-occupational deafness
-heart attack

EFFECT OF NOISE POLLUTION

Animal

-migration of birds
-effect on egg production
-inability to hear important prey/predator sound
Non-Living Things

-causes cracks in building, stones, Earth

MITIGATION MEASURES
1. Prohibition notices
This notice sets out requirements that you must comply with, including:
the type of plant or machinery to use
limits on hours of working
maximum noise levels

2. Prior Consent
Your consent application must contain details of:
the work you want to undertake
the location of your works
your proposed working hours
the method of work
the steps you will take to minimise noise

3. Protecting your workplace

Use earplugs to avoid hearing damage

4. Reduce Noise from Equipment and Vehicles

Service vehicle and machinery regularly
Fit noise-reducing devices, such as silencers and baffles, to your machinery.
Use mains generatedelectricity

5. Working Hours
--limit the sound produced during working hours

SCHEDULE OF PERMISSIBLE SOUND LEVEL

(DOE MALAYSIA)

6. Managing the Impact of your works on the Public

Identify any site boundaries that may be sensitive to noise or

vibration.
- Position these systems that create high levels of noise as far
away as possible from housing.
- Use mains power in preference to diesel generators to reduce
nuisance residents. .
Reduce the noise level when running generators and

compressors by closed the access doors.

7. Noise Monitoring
- Monitor background noise at noise sensitive locations, for
example, residential areas, before your works begin and
periodically during the contract.
- Only use monitoring equipment that has a current calibration
certificate.

CONCLUSION
Enviromental Impact Assessment (EIA) acts as a tool to
evaluate the possible threats that may arise to the
people in the housing area, industrial area and
infrastructure area and propose mitigation measures to
minimize the noise impacts.
