Objectives & Purpose of the Lesson

GRADE LEVEL: 3
SUBJECT AREA: Science
POS OBJECTIVES:

Compare samples of various kinds of rock, and identify similarities and differences.

Given a description of the properties of a particular rock or mineral, identify a sample rock or mineral that matches
those properties.

Describe and classify a group of rocks and minerals

PURPOSE:
After this lesson, the students should be able to recognize and classify the
different types of rocks. This knowledge will allow them to delve into different

building materials and understand structures and design on a deeper level.

Hook (anticipatory set)

Using a large ziploc bag, have students put various ingredients into
the bag (e.g. oatmeal, chocolate chips, other ingredients to be able
to make cookies)
Place the bag under a heat lamp to cook while the lesson is
happening
Once lesson is over, students will be able to identify what type of
rock formation this is representing and then be able to enjoy the
tasty treat after

TEACHING: Directions, Demos & Exemplars

Through using Nearpod, you have the ability to do exploration on a
topic, questions, matching, polls, drawing, virtual tours, and even
embeded videos.
This lesson will use definitions with supporting examples to explain
each type of rock. It will then be supplemented by videos and
questions after each video to deepen the understanding of each
type of rock. The lesson than goes into a question near the end
where they are to match definitions to each name to do a check on
the knowledge. The last activity is an open ended drawing question
where the students use the knowledge gaiend to compile a picture
of their understanding of the information presented to them prior.

Diagnostic Assessment:

Assess students strengths and weaknesses

Teacher is able to see each students answers
and how quickly they are answering to see how
they are dealing with the knowledge presented
and how well they are udnerstanding the

understanding
Gives examples of each type of rock
Supplementing videos will deepen the
knowledge followed by a question to see what
information they absorbed from the video
The bag of cookies is a practical and real life
example of a type of rock where they can take
previously gained knowledge
and apply what

they know to see what type of rock this is to
represent

Summative Assessment:
Checking for mastery and achievement of
objectives
Final drawing of each type of rock and
explaination written on the picture

Check for understanding:

Through out the activity, the teacher is able to see each response
that the students submit for each question.
The application also allows for the teacher to go back into a
previously done lesson and revisit submitted answers. This will be
helpful to give a fair check of the knowledge; rather than trying to
mark on the spot and holding the class back to wait for the
assesment.

Guided practice:
Nearpod allows the teacher to frame the activities in a way that
allow multiple styles of activities.
The teacher is able to control the activity and see how students are
doing during the lesson. They are able to see who has submit
answers and hasnt so they can help thsoe who are struggling and
offer assistance that is needed
When it comes to learning aspects of the activity such as the
videos, and on screen exmples of types of rocks, students would tip
their screens so that they are giving focus to the smart board at the
front and then when it comes to the questions/activities, they will
go on individual devices and complete the questions than

Independent practice:
Nearpod allows those with a premium account to do both live
lessons and student paced lessons
I would have another lesson where the students would be able to
create their own nearpod lesson with a partner, near the end of the
unit to be able to tie in all the knowledge that they have gained
from the unit and these would be shared with the class where they
are able to do the student directed versions
The lessons that the students create will be a way for them to show
and share all the knowledge that they have gained in a fun and
interesting way, shedding a different light on the unit to help other
students gain a deeper understanding of the unit

Closure:
Once the lesson is done on nearpod, i would than explain how they
will be working with a partner to create their own Nearpod lessons
soon to be able to show their learning
The studnets would than be invited to try the other students
created lessons to gain a deeper understanding, told from a
different perspective of a peer

Differentiated Learning Opportunities

[EXTENSION]:
With Nearpod being teacher directed and the teacher being able to see who has ans has
not submit an answer for each activity, the teacher is able to offer assistance to those
who seem to be struggling
The students will be able to use their technology knowledge and create a new lesson on
given topic
With the abilitiy to check back on previously completed lessons, the teacher can see
areas of strength and weakness with each and every student to offer additional
assistance to those who would need it

Reflections:
After teaching this lesson, I would be able to recognize areas of
strength and weaknesses within the class to be able to offer
assistance to those who would be needing it
I feel that it would be easy enough to use Nearpod to help assist a
lesson and offer another way of interacting with the material, rather
than standards and stereotypical practices of pedagogy
From doing this assignment, I have learned how technology can be
a simple but yet very effective way to make the topic at hand
something that can be more relatable (e.g. the videos that are in
the Nearpod lesson)
