INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN OF MECHANICAL PARTS AND

MECHANISMS
Mechanical design is the process of materializing the
design information into a physical prototype driven by
the knowledge
Computer aided Design (CAD) is an important tool in
designing of mechanical parts and mechanisms.
Design knowledge model is represented by FunctionBehavior-structure which is facilitated by CAD
The model represents the three fundamental aspects of the
design knowledge and infers how the functions and
behaviors are achieved based on geometry reasoning.

DESIGN KNOWLEDGE
Design is the confluence of technical, social and cognitive processes.
Hence, design knowledge needs to be interpreted from cognitive
perspective.
Data is the basic unit of information representation,
Characters are the basic visual and verbal elements,
Eg: Pixels, 3D points, and words,

Syntax refers to the way characters are arranged without considering the
meaning of such arrangement and
Semantics deals with the meaning of these elements and the meaning of their
arrangements
Knowledge includes domain-specific facts like rules of design for mechanisms,
which assist the inference at semantic levels within information models.

CLASSIFICATION SCHEMA OF DESIGN KNOWLEDGE

Interpretation of design knowledge from cognitive
perspective :

HIERARCHY OF DESIGN UNITS AND FUNCTIONAL

FEATURES

HIERARCHY OF DESIGN UNITS AND FUNCTIONAL

FEATURES
Whole system is composed of design units comprising
design sub-units, below which lies functional parts.
The depth level of detail for a design unit, made up of
assembly and sub-assembly is decided based on the
requirements.
Functional features not only includes geometric
information but also design intents or functions.
Form Features are manipulated in terms of geometry,
which are used by the machining features to define the
geometry.

COMPARISON WITH TRADITIONAL DESIGN STAGES

COMPARISON WITH TRADITIONAL DESIGN STAGES

Class 1: The generic structure of the design artifact is
unknown
Class 2: The generic structure of the design artifact is
known but specific scheme (composition and layout) is
unknown.
Class 3: Both specific scheme and the structure tree &
topology of the artifact are known
These three classes are very much analogous to the
traditional design stages of conceptual design,
embodiment design and detail design.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE OF THE DESIGN EXPERT SYSTEM

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE OF THE DESIGN EXPERT SYSTEM

The knowledge base of the proposed design expert
system stores the following
Knowledge for configurational design; topology design, parts
selection and arrangement
Design constraints for parametric modeling and inference
Feature attributes
Heuristic knowledge of design
