Seatwork 4

Problem 1
If the piston and water ( = 62.4 lbm/ft3) are accelerated upward
at a rate of 0.5g, what will be the pressure at a depth of 2 ft in
the water column?

Problem 2
The closed tank shown, which is full of liquid, is accelerated
downward at g and to the right at 1g. Here L = 2.5 m, H = 3 m,
and the liquid has a specific gravity of 1.3. Determine Pc Pa and
Pb - Pa.

Problem 3
A tank of liquid (S = 0.80) that is 1 ft in diameter and 1.0 ft high (h = 1.0 ft) is
rigidly fixed (as shown) to a rotating arm having a 2 ft radius. The arm rotates
such that the speed at point A is 20 ft/s. If the pressure at A is 25 psf, what is
the pressure at B?

Problem 4
A U-tube is rotated about one leg, as shown. Before being rotated the liquid in
the tube fills 0.25 m of each leg. The length of the base of the U-tube is 0.5 m,
and each leg is 0.5 m long. What would be the maximum rotation rate (in
rad/s) to ensure that no liquid is expelled from the outer leg?

Problem 5
A closed rectangular tank 5m high, 3m in width and 6m in length
is filled with 3.5m of water. If it is accelerated at 18m/s^2
determine the force experience at the both sides of the tank

Problem 6
A rectangular car tank 20m long, 4m wide and 3m deep
is completely open at the top. If it is initially filled to the
top: (a) How much liquid will be spilled if it is given a
horizontal acceleration of 0.3g in the direction of its
length? (b) What is the maximum hydrostatic force
acting on the side opposite the direction of the
acceleration. (c) Determine the volume of the remaining
water at the tank.

Problem 7
The container shown has a width of 500 mm and
contains water to a depth of 300mm. (a) At what angle
will the water surface makes with the horizontal when
the tank is accelerated tot the right so that the water
will just touch point A. (b) Determine the acceleration
right at this instant. (c) What is the maximum pressure
at point B of the tank at this instant

Problem 8
An open cylindrical tank having a radius of 0.30 m and a
height of 1.20m is filled with a water at a depth of
0.90m (a) how fast will it be rotated about its vertical
axis if half of its volume is spilled out? (b) How fast will
it be rotated about its vertical axis so that no water will
be spilled out? (c) How fast will it be rotated about its
vertical axis so as to produce zero pressure with 0.20m
from the center of the tank?

Problem 9
The figure shown contains water and the water level is
at a depth of 40mm when at rest. If it rotates at a speed
of 250 rpm and neglecting capillary effects: (a)
Determine the remaining depth at the center capillary
tube. (b) What is the increase in height of water at the
outer capillary tube? (c) What is the total height that the
water reach in the outer capillary tube?

Problem 10
A closed tank 3m in diameter and 3m high is filled with
water and rotates about its axis at 100 rpm. A pressure
gage at the center of the top reasds 30 kPa. During the
rotation. (a) Determine the equivalent height of the fluid
above the topalong its periphery. (b) Determine the
pressure at the outer perimeter at the bottom of the
tank. (b) Determine the pressure at the bottom of the
tank at the center.
