Chetan Maini was born in Bangalore, and he was crazy about all
kinds of electronics, as he can remember.
He is a founder of Reva Electric Car Company.
Today, Reva is not only producing such vehicles but licensing its
technology to the likes of General Motors.

How he came up?

What he did?
What should be?
Learn from him?

Chetan maini came up :

At 13, he was building go-karts.
At 20, he bulit a solar powered car.
At 24, he was leading an electric car project.
At 31, he launched this car.

About his past innovative like radio, remote control planes and
assembling remote control cars.
One summer chetan spent the whole three months vacation building a
go-kart. He picked up an old engine & components from the junkyard
& did the job on shoestring budget of Rs.1500.
He studied mechanical engineering but spent fifty percent of time on
extracurricular projects. In first year itself he worked on a super
mileage car which would give 400km/litre!
In his second year, chetan became very passionate about the solar car
project an inter-university competition where teams built a car from
scratch and for this project itself he spent only $40000, so in this race
he came first.

In 1991, Chetan joined Dr Bells start up.

Chetan and Dr Bell built the platform of an electric car and evaluated
many different technologies.

Chetan Maini was visiting India once a year and started getting
a feel for how things were changing here. The economy was
opening up, pollution was getting crazy.
Problems came over the Chetan. Because he realized that the
way in which technology was developed led to a very high cost
structure.
The first prototype took a year to build. In 1996, the first car
was shipped to India and by the following year it had been
thoroughly tested. In fact, Reva even secured ARAI*
certification in 1997.
Some few could envision.
Financial aspects institution like ICICI and TDB and raised
debt financing of around Rs. 15 crores for the for the project.

Over 2 years, Reva built 40 cars. These cars were tested for a million
kms and luanched the first car in India in July 2001.
Reva retails for 7000 pounds; the company has far sold over 1000 cars
in the UK (i.e brand G Wiz). In India, Reva was a vehicle for the costconscious middle class buyer.
All this support was valuable, but the company needed more money to
grow rapidly. In December 2006 Chetan raised his first round of VC
funding - $20 million from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Global
Environment Fund and Fuse
In September 2009, general motors became the 1st auto major to tie up
with Reva to produce an electric version of the Chevy Spark.

You need to have a very strong belief in your idea to

make it happen.
When i found myself facing a problem, I would sleep
over it. When I took a look at it in the morning. I tried
to see opportunity. I found that worked very well; it made
me positive and I was able to push that within the group
and the company.
In hindsight, what may seem like a setback was actually
just the push you needed to try something new, to
stretch your limits.
