Science Lesson 3: How do magnets

interact with other objects?

I can describe what happens to the magnetic force when
the distance increases between two magnets. (PS2.B)

Entrance slip

What kind of materials do magnets stick to?

What two ways do magnets interact

with other objects?

What would the model look like if you drew this and
labeled it?

Background - Schema
Some magnets can pull harder than other than others.
Remember every force has a strength and a direction.
The strength and direction of a magnets force can
depend on the magnets size, materials the magnet is
made of, how far away the magnet is, and how the
magnet is turned. In this investigation we will explore
magnetic forces and how the magnet interacts with other
materials.

Our materials for today

The power of prediction. One object

has been magnetized. How do we
know this?

Which object has a force with

another object? Which objects have
balanced forces?

How does distance and thickness

affect magnetism?

Distance and thickness?

Schema
Distance weakens the magnetic force between a
magnet and another object or another magnet.

Questions

Can you ?

How can you create a temporary

magnet?
How can an item become magnetized?

What happens for an object to

become magnetized

Reasoning.. induced magnetism

When a magnet touches an iron
object, that iron object becomes
a temporary magnet. It stays a
magnet only as long as it is in the
invisible magnet field of the
permanent magnet. Iron objects
are not magnets themselves, but
a property of iron allows it to
become magnetized quite easily.
This kind of temporary
magnetism is called induced
magnetism.

Can you induce the nail to become a

magnet?
How were you able to do this?

How to magnetize or induce

magnetism on a nail.

Word Bank
Temporary Magnet- a piece of
iron that acts or behaves like a
magnet when it is touching a
permanent magnet.
Induced magnetism the
influence of a permanent magnets
magnetic field on a piece f iron,
which makes the iron act like a
magnet.

Discussion
What happens when you touch a piece of iron to a
permanent magnet?

Schema
Magnetism is induced into the piece of iron and it
becomes a temporary magnet.
Magnetism can be induced only in iron or steel.

Discussion
Is the force of magnetism stopped by any materials?
How do we know?

Schema
Yes. The force will be stopped by thick objects and
sheets of steel.

Discussion
How does distance affect the ability of a magnet to
attract a piece of iron?

Schema
Distance weakens the magnetic force between a
magnet and another object or another magnet.
