WCDMA RMC Connection

RMC stands for Reference Measurement Channel.
The RMC connection is a special call where the phone is set by the radio tester in a
loopback mode.
This type of connection allows the phone to send back to the radio tester the data bit
stream in order that the radio tester can test the phones transmitter and receiver
performances.

CMU200

Activating packet data services

The CMU mimics a UTRAN cell which may or may not support packet data services.
The packet switched domain must be enabled before a (CS or PS) connection is set
up (enabled by default).
Open the Network tab of the Connection Control menu and ensure that the PS
domain is enabled (Packet Switched Domain: On).

49

CMU200

PS Connection: Preparations
To prepare a PS connection take the following steps:
1. In the Menu Select menu, select one of the menus in WCDMA Signalling mode.
The Connection Control menu is opened. If no previous connection has been established,
the CMU is in the signalling state PS: Idle, CS: Signal On.
2. Switch on your UE and wait until the R&S CMU has reached the signaling state PS:
Attached, CS: Registered.
The following steps depend on whether you wish to perform HSDPA, HSUPA, or packet
data application tests (which may be performed on HSDPA/HSUPA channels, too), and
which HSDPA/HSUPA connection scheme you prefer.

50

CMU200

HSDPA Test Mode with direct PS connection

In the following fast connection scheme, no circuit-switched but only a packet data connection is
set up.
3. Open the BS Signal tab and open the Packet Switched HSDPA Test Mode section where
you can select the Radio Bearer Setup that the R&S CMU uses to set up the packet switched
connection.
4. Still in the BS Signal tab, switch the HSDPA channels in the downlink signal on (Downlink
Physical Channels HSDPA Channels: On).
5. Open the Connection tab and press Connect UE (PS) to set up a packet switched
connection. Do not attempt a call from the UE or a simultaneous circuit switched connection.
6. Close the Connection Control menu (if it is not closed automatically). The CMU is in the
signalling state PS: Established, CS: Registered where it is ready to perform HSDPA tests.
HSDPA tests may also be performed with a CS connection; see below.

51

CMU200

HSDPA Test Mode with CS connection

HSDPA tests with an additional CS connection are an alternative to HSDPA tests in the signalling
state PS: Established, CS: Registered. The additional CS connection takes time, however,
measurements can be performed in accordance with specification 3GPP TS 34.108.
3. In the PS: Attached, CS: Registered signalling state, open the BS Signal tab and select Circuit
Switched DCH (Dedicated Chn.) Type: RMC.
4. Select Circuit Switched RMC Settings Reference Channel Type: 12.2 kbps + HSDPA
34.108 or 12.2 kbps (+ HSDPA).
5. Perform the other BS Signal settings as described above.
6. Open the Connection tab and press Connect UE (CS) to set up the circuit switched RMC
connection.

The connection setup depends on the selected reference channel type:

52

With a 12.2 kbps + HSDPA 34.108 reference channel, the packet switched connection is set up
automatically after the circuit switched connection so that the R&S CMU reaches the signalling state PS:
Established, CS: Connected.
With a 12.2 kbps (+ HSDPA) reference channel, the R&S CMU reaches the signalling state PS:
Attached, CS: Connected. Measurements on CS channels can be performed in this state. In addition it is
possible to set up the additional packet switched connection (Connect UE (PS)).
