BLOCKBOARD
Block board is made up of a core softwood strips.
The strips are placed edge to edge and sandwiched
between veneers of hardwood and the glued under high
pressure.
These strips may be 25 mm wide.
It is basically sold in a standard size of 2440 by 1220mm
and are normally 30mm thick.
USES
It is used for making shelves, doors , panelling and
partitions.
While making doors or tables it is important to ensure
that the core runs lengthways in order to achieve
maximum strength.
It is not suitable for outdoor use because the glue used
are interior glues which is not resistant to increased heat
and dampness.
PARTICLE BOARD
It is also known as chip board which is manufactured from
wood chips, sawmill shavings or even sawdust and a
synthetic resin, which is pressed and extruded.
It is cheaper, lighter, denser and more uniform than wood
and plywood and is substituted when cost is more
important than strength and appearance.
It is rarely used n outdoor places where there are high
levels of moisture, with the exception of some bathroom
and kitchens, where it is commonly used in underlayment.
WOOD VENEER
Veneer refers to thin slices of wood, usually thinner than
3mm, that typically are glued onto core panels such as
wood, particle board or medium density fibre board to
produce flat panels such as doors, panels for cabinets,
floors and parts of furniture.
It is obtained by peeling the trunk of a tree or by slicing
large rectangular blocks of wood.
The appearance of it depends on the slicing through the
growth rings or on the angle which its cut.
TYPES OF VENEER

ADVANTAGES
Compared to wood, primary advantage is it provides
stability.
While wood can be prone to splitting or warping, veneer
has less chances of splitting and cracking as its made of
thin layers of wood glued together , the glue provides
additional strength , making the end product stronger
than natural wood.
Some projects can only be constructed using veneer and
not with wood due to the fluctuation of temperature and
humidity.
Furniture made with wood veneer uses less wood than in
comparison with solid wood.

FINISHING MATERIAL
Wood finishing refers to the process of refining or protecting
a wooden surface, especially in the production of furniture
where typically it represents between 5 and 30% of
manufacturing costs.
Finishing is the final step of the manufacturing process that
gives wood surfaces desirable characteristics, including
enhanced appearance and increased resistance to moisture
and other environmental agents.
Finishing can also make wood easier to
clean and influence other wood properties, for example
tonal qualities of musical instruments and hardness of
flooring.
In addition, finishing provides a way of giving lowvalue woods the appearance of ones that are expensive
and difficult to obtain.
VENEER
In woodworking, veneer refers to thin slices of wood,
usually thinner than 3 mm (1/8 inch),that typically are
glued onto core panels (typically, wood, particle board
or medium-density fiberboard) to produce flat panels
such as doors, tops and panels for cabinets, parquet
floors and parts of furniture.
They are also used in marquetry. Plywood consists of
three or more layers of veneer, each glued with its
grain at right angles to adjacent layers for strength.
Veneer beading is a thin layer of decorative edging
placed around objects, such as jewelry boxes. Veneer
is also used to replace decorative papers in Wood
Veneer HPL. Veneer is also a type of manufactured
board.
LAMINATE
MATERIAL
There are different lamination processes, depending on
the type of materials to be laminated.
The materials used in laminates can be the same or
different, depending on the processes and the object to
be laminated. An example of the type of laminate using
different materials would be the application of a layer of
plastic filmthe "laminate"on either side of a sheet of
glassthe laminated subject.
FLOORING
WOODEN STAIRCASE
Special types of stairs
include escalators and
ladders. Some alternatives to
stairs are elevators (lifts in
British English), stair lifts and
inclined moving walkways as
well as stationary inclined
sidewalks.
