Seating Arrangement
Seating arrangement problems are
an analytical reasoning exercise
for making a group of people to
sit (or stand), or objects to place,
as per a pre-fixed manner,
following some conditions and
sub conditions.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Seating Arrangement
It can be in
One row sequence
Two rows sequence
Circular sequence*
* Also square / rectangular / oval sequence
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Some basic assumptions

Unless otherwise specifically stated, all
sitting / standing / placed are to be
assumed
at

equal distance (equi-distant)

looking in one direction if linear
looking towards the centre if
circular*
* Also square / rectangular / oval sequence

Guidelines to solve
Before attempting,

Find the number of people /

objects in the problem
Find out the definite,
comparative and negative
information given in the problem
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Definite information

When the place of any

person or object is
definitely mentioned,
it is called definite
information
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Definite information
Examples are

Ashok is sitting in the left end of

the bench.
Bharath is in the middle of the row.
Chanchal is looking towards east
(in the circular sequence).
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Definite information

You should place the

person or object with
the definite
information first,
even if it is given in
the problem last.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Comparative information
When the place of any person
or object is not mentioned
definitely, but mentioned
only in comparison of
(an)other person/s or
object/s, then we say it is a
comparative information
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

Comparative information
Examples are

Divakar is sitting second to

the right of Earnest.
Francis is sitting next to
Govind.
Hima is sitting exactly in the
middle of Indu and Jayesh.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

10

Comparative information
Before placing Divakar, we
should know where Earnest is
sitting.
And before placing Francis we
should know where Govind is.
Similarly, to place Hima, we
should know where Indu and
Jayesh are placed.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

11

Negative Information
A negative information does
not tell us anything
definitely about where one
is to be placed, but it
gives an idea to
eliminate a possibility.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

12

Negative Information
Examples are

Kashmira is not sitting to the

left of Lavanya.
Maya is not equi-distant from
Neena and Omana.
Piyush is not the neighbor of
Rekha
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

13

Negative Information
Negative information help
us to find the exact place
by elimination of the
(many) other possibility /
possibilities.

confusion.
They are explained in the

19

How problems are made

trickier
In the sequence gents are made to stand
facing one direction and ladies in the
opposite.
Sometimes, different generations are
made to look in different directions.
Occasionally, the people arranged are
from one family and looking in different
directions, based on their gender /
profession and / or generations.

20

Advantage of problems on
Seating Arrangement
You may get five related questions on
these kind of problems fetching you
easily five marks in the test.
And very often this kind of problems are
asked as a matter of routine.
So, if you study thoroughly the concepts
and practice adequate number of
problems, you can correctly attempt
such problems.

Exercises to drive the

concepts-1

With the information below, arrange

them in a row:

(i)A,B,C,D,E,F,G and H are standing in a row

facing north.
(ii) B is not neighbor of G.
(iii) F is to the immediate right of G and
neighbor of E.
(iv) G is not at the extreme end.
(v) A is sixth to the left of E
(vi) H is sixth to the right of C

Eight friends, A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H are sitting
in a circle facing the centre.
(i)B is sitting between G and D.
(ii) H is third to the left of B and second to the
right of A
(iii) C is sitting between A and G and
(iv) B and E are not sitting opposite to each other.

43

Exercises to drive the

concepts-3
From Statement (i), B is
sitting between G and
D.
Let us place our friend B at
position 1.
Then either
G can be in position 8 and D
can be in position 2,
OR
D can be in position 8 and G
can be in position 2,
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

44

Exercises to drive the

concepts-3
From Statement (ii), H is
third to the left of B,
Then either
G can be in position 8 and D
can be in position 2, and H
is at position 4 and A is at
position 6
OR
D can be in position 8 and G
can be in position 2, and H
is at position 4 and A is at
position 6
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

45

From Statement (iii), C is

sitting between A and
G, we rule out one of the
possibilities, and conclude

G is in position 8 and D can

be in position 2, and H is at
position 4 and A is at
position 6 and C is in
position 7.

01/12/17

46

Exercises to drive the

concepts-3
From Statement (iii), B and E
are not sitting opposite
to each other,

G is in position 8 and D in
position 2, and H is at
position 4 and A is at
position 6 and C is in
position 7, we get E can not
in position 5, but only in
position 3.
Obviously, then, F can be only
in position 5.
01/12/17

in.ramanathan@yahoo.in

47

Exercises to drive the

Thus, to sum up, the positions
are as follows:

1. B
2. D
3. E
4. H
5. F
6. A
7. C
and
8. G

Seating Arrangement
Now you re thorough with the concepts.
You can sole the problems with accuracy.
But you have to practice as many problems,
including tricky ones, to gain speed and
confidence.
And your solving the seating arrangement problem
will depend on the practice you do.
To be successful, you need both, speed and
accuracy.
