How disassemble and

reassemble a
computer
George Loutskou and Mark Medd

DISCLAMER
This presentation is based off the computer we were
supplied. If it is in any way incorrect it is because of
previous tampering by other students.
With this in mind we cannot supply a accurate guide
and/or video due to the age of the system and its
condition.

To do this you will need a desktop computer that you

have permission to use along with some helpful tools.

You many find screwdrivers to be of use and a may also

find that having a wrench will help with case jams and
stuck parts.

Remember to
use no more
force then you
would use on
your own nose

All are optional but I Highly recommend you use them

When you open your computer you should see a

arrangement of similar parts (windows only)

Hard drive

Power supply
DVD/CD drive

The first step in disassembling a computer is to

look for a button on the side of the DVD/CD drive

Pushing this will permit you to lift the case

be careful with the wires that are connected (if applies)

The button may

need to be pressed
to release the
drive from the
case
(if applies)

On top of the drive you should see

something like this with two
connectors attached

Be careful when removing these wires as they can be

delicate (and do not pull from the wires use the heads
of the wires)

Once the wires are safely removed

you can push the button on the side
(if applies)

Once released it should slide right

out

The drive once extracted should

look somewhat similar to this drive

Now we will remove the hard drive

Pulling in the (blue) curved plastic piece at the top will release the hard
drive from the computer and will allow us to access the two wires in
that need to be removed in a similar fashion to the DVD/CD drive

By now you should have two

components separated
DVD/CD Drive
Hard Drive

Next you must begin removing the

motherboard

There are several cables on the top corner that need to

be unplugged before the motherboard can be removed
(remove highlighted)
There can be one
or two depending
on how many usb
slots are plugged
in at the time

These are
Sata ports
These
connect the
DVD/CD
drive and
also connect
the hard
drive

There is one more you will need to

remove
(see shown)

In the lower left corner there should

be two connectors as shown

Remove them

Take out the punisher

Make sure to squeeze the
blue tabs near the fan and
pull on the black parts near
them to release the
motherboard

There is normally 4 ram chips

that each have a
corresponding slot based on
pairs and color

Cutting the power

When removing the power supply
you must be carful and remove it
in its side so it doesn't go and
smash the wires near it when it
comes loose (note the little metal
nub on the side that holds it in
place, do remember this when
reinserting the power source)
Also make sure you have
removed the rest of the
components before attempting
this

now you should have a empty case

The previous steps can easily be reversed to build the
computer again but for those lazy people here they are

The power is back on

To reinsert the power you must slide it along the cases
side to fit the little metal nub on the side into the secure
slot
Then put back In the screws to secure it further

Hold back the beating

The mother-board can be put back in by resting the
boards slots on the edges grooved into the small arrow
headed metal stubs

Re-attaching the wires

The three corners each have slots for the wires
mentioned earlier
If you do not remember the locations of each wire
please go back and check the appropriate slide

DVD/CD drive and Hard drive

The DVD/CD drive must be rewired with the black cord
and applied connector and can be folded down simply
once the wires are tied together
The Hard drive can be inserted by resting it on the
metal rungs and re-attaching the blue cord and the
other cable from before
Simply putting down the hard drive will secure it well
(make sure the drive is secure and properly held)

Now to conclude this computer

Delicately close the case
Go do something fun
Forget this

Etc..

Details to the death: motherboard

functions as the
central nervous
system for the
computer and is
where everything

Details to the death: power supply

The power supply

Details to the death: ram modules

The ram
modules each
have a

Details to the death: DVD/CD drive

The DVD/CD drive
serves as a disk
reader that uses
lasers to read the pits
on the surface to the
disks to form 1s and
0s

Details to the death: hard disk drive

The hard disk drive serves
as a storage location and it
does so using a spinning
disk that is covered in small
pits that mean 1s and 0s to
store data
