Novel . . .
The second novel written by Rizal as
sequel to Noli Me Tangere
Started writing on October 1887 in
Calamba
Finished in March 29 1891 in Biarritz
It took Rizal three years to write his
second novel.

in Ghent
July 5, 1891 Rizal and Jose Alejandrino left
Brussels for Ghent
Reasons:
1. Printing cost in Ghent was cheaper than
in Brussel
2. To escape from enticing attraction of
Suzanne Jacoby

-willing to print the book on installment
basis.
He pawned his jewels to pay the down
payment and early partial payments.
He received some money from Basa and
P200 from Rodriguez Arias

El Filibusterismo, just like he did in Noli

press
Rizal immediately send 2 copies to
Hongkong
-one for Basa and the other for Sixto
Lopez
He gratefully gave the original
manuscript of El Fili and a printed copy
with his autograph to Valentin Ventura

Rizal dedicated El Filibusterismo to GomBur-Za (Don Mariano Gomez, 73 years old;
Don Jose Burgos, 35 years old; Jacinto
Zamora, 37 years old)

Manuscript
and the
Book
Original manuscript of El Fili in Rizals own
handwriting in now preserved in the
Filipiana Division of the Bureau of
Public Libraries, Manila. It consists of 270
pages of long sheets of paper.
Two features that didnt appear in the
printed book, namely: the FOREWORD and
the WARNING.
-These were not put into print to save
printing cost

Filibusterismo/Filibustero
- Rizal first heard this word during the
execution of
GOMBURZA
- At that time filibustero referred to those
who are provoking a revolution against the
foreign government
- Dangerous patriot, Rebel,
Subversive
The title page of El Filibusterismo contains an
inscription written by Ferdinand Blumentritt.

September 22, 1891 Rizal wrote to
Blumetritt saying that hes thinking of
writing a third novel where ethics will play
principal role.
October 18, 1891 boarded Melbroune in
Marseilles bound for H.K., during the
voyage he wrote the third novel in
Tagalog.

The unfinished 3rd novel has no title. It
consists of 44 pages in Rizals
handwriting
The manuscript is still preserved in the
Bureau of Public Libraries (National
Library)
The hero of the novel was Kamandagan,
a descendant of Lakan-Dula, last king of
Tondo. He plotted to regain the lost
freedom of his fathers.

light sarcastic style, incomplete with
only 2 chapters and consists of only of
20 pages.

Dapitan - written in Ironic Spanish, he


wrote it while in Dapitan to depict the
town life and customs; it consists of 8
pages.

a town in Laguna, consist of 147 pages,
without title.
Another unfinished novel is also without
title, is about Cristobal, a youthful
Filipino student who has returned from
Europe, consists if 34 pages.

contained in two notebooks. The first
notebook contains 31 written pages
while the second contains 12 pages.
