CONTROL CHART

generate thekindividualcharts

does NOT account for correlation

between the measurement processes

HOTELLING CONTROL CHART

introduced by Harold Hotelling in 1947

multivariate extension of thechart that

does take the correlation into account
a multivariate method that is the
multivariate counterpart of Students t
forms the basis for certain multivariate
control charts

HOTELLING CONTROL CHART

the data can consist of subgroups or

individual observations.

consists of two phases

Phase 1
Phase 2

T2 TEST STATISTIC

SUBGROUPED DATA: PHASE 1

also known as retrospective analysis
used in testing whether the process
was in-control
primary objective is to obtain an incontrol set of observation

SUBGROUPED DATA: PHASE 1

Control Limits:

where p = number of quality characteristics

m= number of preliminary samples
n= sample size

SUBGROUPED DATA: PHASE 2

Used in monitoring future prediction
decisions must be made based on
certain changes in the elements of
production

SUBGROUPED DATA: PHASE 2

Control Limits:

where p = number of quality characteristics

m= number of preliminary samples
n= sample size

INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATION
n=1
usually used in the field of chemical and
process industries
T2 test statistic:

INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATION
Control Limits (Phase 1):

where p = number of quality characteristics

m= number of preliminary samples
n= 1

INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATION
Control Limits (Phase 2):if m100

where p = number of quality characteristics

m= number of preliminary samples
n= 1

INDIVIDUAL OBSERVATION
Control

Limits (Phase 2):if m100

or

where p = number of quality characteristics

m= number of preliminary samples
n= 1

EXAMPLE

The tensile strength and diameter of a

textile fiber are two important quality
characteristics that are to be jointly
controlled. The quality engineer has
decided to use n = 10 fiber specimens in
each sample. He has taken 20 preliminary
samples, and on the basis of these data he
concludes that = 115.59 psi, = 1.06 x
(10^-2) inch, = 1.23, = 0.83, and = 0.79.
Set up the control chart.

SOLUTION

SOLUTION

Calculating the upper control limit with ,

SOLUTION

Phase II control limits could be calculated

using the equation below
