What is a
verb?

A verb is a "doing" word. A verb can


express:
A physical action
(e.x., to swim, to write, to climb).
A mental action
(e.x., to think, to guess, to
consider).
A state of being (Linking & Helping
Verbs)
(e.x, to be, to exist, to appear).

An action verb expresses an activity that a person or thing can DO
physically (with their body) or mentally (with their mind)

What are State of Being Verbs?


These types of verbs do not express an action but rather a state of
being.
There are two types

State of Being Verbs:


Linking Verbs:

Helping Verbs:

Connect the subject (noun) to the rest of the


sentence.

Help other verbs in the sentence.

Without linking verbs, there would be a lot of


baby talk going on! (I hungry, She scary!
Carrots yucky!)
Most linking verbs are a form of the verb (to be)
Forms of to be include: is, are, was, were, am,
will be, can be, has been, have been
She WAS nice

I AM thirsty

Usually the helping verb is right next to


the main verb, but sometimes they are
separated.
Common Examples: am. Are. be, can,
did, had, may, might, should, was, will
Examples:
Your friends should not call you.

Cookies ARE great

You will study for the test.

Mrs. Freer IS a teacher

Sally can speak in front of the class.

Some tips to help decide which verb type it


is
Ask yourself
Is it a physical action?
Is it a mental action
Is someone or something being described? If so, look for
a linking verb.
IS there a helping verb next to the main verb?
Is there a helping verb somewhere in the sentence?
