What is stress?

Stress is simply a reaction to a stimulus that disturbs our


physical or mental equilibrium.
It is an omnipresent part of life.
A stressful event can trigger the fight-or-flight
response, causing hormones such as adrenaline and
cortisol to surge through the body

Two kinds of stress

acute
- a little bit of stress
- can be exciting as it keeps us active and alert
chronic
- long-term
- can have detrimental effects on health

Signs & Symptoms

Physical Symptoms
- irregular bowel movements, missed periods, reduced
libido, chest pain, headaches, sleeplessness, heartburn
or indigestion, flushed skin, clenched teeth
Emotional Symptoms
- impatience, feeling of sadness/depression, being
overwhelmed, reduced desire for activities once enjoyed
or done regularly, irritability, trouble coping, frequent or
extreme pessimistic attitude

Signs & Symptoms

Behavioral Symptoms
- change in eating and sleeping habits; new or increased
use of drugs, tobacco; nail biting; pacing; abnormal failure
or delay to complete everyday responsibilities; significant
change in school or work performance; unusual desire for
social isolation; trouble getting along with peers
Cognitive Symptoms
- impaired concentration, trouble remembering, reduced or
impaired judgment, impaired speech, repetitive or
unwanted thoughts
