Item #1 Question/s

What specific type of text did you just see?

What is its purpose? (3040 words)

Item #2

Etymologically the term technology comes from the

combination of these two Greek morphemes tkhn,
(meaning art) and -loga (meaning study). It refers to the
collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes
used in the production of goods or services or in the
accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific
investigation.
The human species' use of technology began with the
conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The
prehistoric discovery of how to control fire and the later
Agricultural Revolution increased the available sources of
food. Likewise, the invention of the wheel helped humans
to travel in and control their environment. Later
developments in historic times, including the printing press,
the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical
barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact
freely on a global scale. The steady progress of military
technology has brought weapons of ever-increasing
destructive power.

Item #2 Question/s

What word/term is the text giving a definition

for? What does tkhn mean? What does

TASK: In just one (1) minute,

look for as many verbs as you
can and list them on your paper.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food assistance branch

of the United Nations, and the world's largest humanitarian
organization addressing hunger worldwide. It was first established in
1961 after the 1960 Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)
Conference, when George McGovern, director of the US Food for
Peace Programmes, proposed establishing a multilateral food aid
programme. WFP was formally established in 1963 by the FAO and
the United Nations General Assembly on a three-year experimental
basis. In 1965, the programme was extended to a continuing basis.
WFP provides food, on average, to 90 million people per year, 58
million of whom are children. From its headquarters in Rome and more
than 80 country offices around the world, WFP works to help people
who are unable to produce or obtain enough food for themselves and
their families. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group
and part of its Executive Committee. The core strategies behind WFP
activities, according to its mission statement, are to provide food aid to:
save lives in refugee and other emergency situations,
improve the nutrition and quality of life of the most vulnerable
people at critical times in their lives,
and help build assets and promote the self-reliance of poor
people and communities, particularly through labour-intensive works
programmes.

Item #4

TASK: How was the word

robot first used? Rephrase
your answer.

Robots
A robot is a mechanical or virtual artificial agent, usually an
electromechanical machine that is guided by a computer program
or electronic circuitry. When robots are virtual software agents, they
are usually referred to as bots.
The word 'robot' was first used to denote a fictional humanoid in a
1920 play R.U.R. by the Czech writer, Karel apek but it was
Karel's brother Josef apek who was the word's true inventor. In an
article in the Czech journal Lidov noviny in 1933, he explained that
he had originally wanted to call the creatures featured in the play
laboi ("workers", from Latin labor). However, he did not like the
word, and sought advice from his brother Josef, who suggested
"roboti". The word robota means literally "corve", "serf labor", and
figuratively "drudgery" or "hard work" in Czech and also (more
general) "work", "labor" in many Slavic languages.
The branch of technology that deals with the design, construction,
operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems
for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing is
robotics.
