EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
Multicultural education is a set of
strategies and materials in education
that were developed to assist teachers
when responding to the many issues
created by the rapidly changing
demographics of their students.
It provides students with knowledge
about the histories, cultures and
contributions of diverse groups; it
assumes that the future society is
pluralistic.
MEANING AND DEFINITION
Multicultural Education refers to any form of
education or teaching, that incorporates the
histories, texts, values, beliefs of people from
different cultural backgrounds.
Multicultural Education is an ideal concept of
pluralism.
According to James A. Banks : Multicultural
Education is a field of study and an emerging
discipline whose major aim is to create equal
educational opportunities to students from
diverse racial,ethnic,social class and culture.
DEVELOPMENT
James A. Banks 1993 ,traces the beginning
of multicultural education to the 1960s. A
decade that is unique in American history.
Banks writes : Multicultural education
grew out of the ferment of Civil rights
movement of the 1960s.
It was a way to eliminate discrimination in
public accomodatioms,housing
,employment and education.
Following are a few representative ways
in which multicultural education may
play out in schools:

four approaches that can teacher use
for integrating multiculturalism into
their curriculum.
