What is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar is a mental disorder characterized by extreme shifts in

mood, with variations in energy and activity levels.

Known as Manic-Depressive Illness

Includes at least one manic episode

Three broad types of Bipolar
Disorder :
1. Bipolar I Disorder
- Most patients have had at least one manic or depressive episode.

2. Bipolar II Disorder

- The patient had experienced one or more episodes of manic or depression

and at least one hypomanic episode.

3. Cyclothymia

- This is seen as a sub-threshold (milder) form of bipolar disorder.


Who are the usual patients of this
disease?
In America, 2.9 % are diagnosed with bipolar disorder

Patients are aged 15-25 yrs. old

Males and Females are affected equally.

Symptoms:
A feeling of gloom, blackness, despair and hopelessness
Extreme sadness
In severe cases, the patient will think about ending their life, and may
act on those thoughts.
Insomnia and sleeping problems.
Anxiety about trivial things.
Guilt
Eating patterns. (eat more or eat less)
Weight loss or weight gain
Extreme tiredness, fatigue listlessness
Inability to feel pleasure with activities or interests that were usually
enjoyed.
Low attention span.
Easily irritated.
Some patients are unable to face going to work or school those
that do typically underperform.
Psychosis patients cannot differentiate fantasy from reality
Major Depressive Disorder Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
- moods which fluctuate with the seasons.
(children and teenagers)- temper tantrums, rapid mood changes,
outbursts of aggression and explosive anger, and reckless
behavior.
