Rizal Leaving the

Philippines for the


Second Time
Hounded by powerful enemies,
Rizal was forced to leave his
country for the second time in
1888.
He was 27 years old, a practicing
physician, and a recognized man
of letters.
RIZAL IN HONG KONG
February 3, 1888-Rizal
left Manila for Hong
Kong on board the
Zafiro

February 7, 1888-
Zafiro made a brief
stopover at Amoy
February 8, 1888-
Rizal arrived in Hong
Kong
Rizal stayed while in Hong Kong. He
was welcomed by Filipino residents,
including Jose Maria Basa, Balbino
Mauricio, and Manuel Yriarte (son of
Francisco Yriarte (son of Francisco
Jose Sainz de Varanda- a
Spaniard, who was a former
secretary of Governor General
Terrero,
shadowed Rizals movement
in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong, wrote Rizal to
Blumentritt on February 16,
1888, is a small, but very
clean city.
RIZAL IN MACAU
- February 18,
1888 Rizal
accompanied
by Basa,
boarded the
Ferry Steamer
Kiu-Kiang for
Macau. He was

few steamers. It looks sad and is
almost dead.

morning of Tuesday, Rizal arrived in

STUDIES
When he was in Tokyo he
decided to study
Japanese language
including Japanese drama
and self-defense. As
usual activities in his tour
he visited art galleries,
museums, libraries,
shrines and parks. The
most colorful life in his
memoirs in Japan was his
romance withO-Sei-San

leave the Philippines and settle
down in Japan.
He was offered a job in the
Spanish Legation

him of his duty and why he left
the Philippines in the first place.
April13, 1888-Rizal left Japan via
the ship Belgic, an English
steamer in Yokohama bound for
United States.

Itended 45 days of his


unforgettable stay in Japan and
his relationship with O-Sei-San.
