Foundation of Human

Values

Ranjan Mitter
Values and their different
shades
Values are basic convictions that a specific
mode of conduct or end-state of existence is
personally or socially preferable to an
opposite or converse mode of conduct or end-
state of existence
Value System indicates a hierarchy based on
a ranking of an individuals values in terms of
their intensity
Personal value system
influences our entire thought
process
Watch your thoughts, they become
words;
Watch your words, they become actions;
Watch your actions, they become habits;
Watch your habits, they become your
character;
Watch your character, for it becomes
your Destiny.
Holistic Role
Effectiveness
Effectiveness based on skills alone can
never be total or holistic. While skills are
undoubtedly needed, the dimension of
values, as well as its logical derivative
attitudes, has to complement skills. Thus
Holistic Effectiveness = f (Skills, Attitudes, Values)
Attitudes = f (Values)
Therefore
Holistic Effectiveness = f (Skills, Values)
Skills = external side of work i.e. Doing
Values = internal side of worker i.e. Becoming
Skills and Values
dimensions
Skills are visible and subject to obsolescence,
but values are not. Compared to skills, values
are difficult to acquire or imbibe.
And while both skills and values are
imperative, these two are not of equal
importance.
Skills Strong Values Strong Most Desirable
Skills Weak Values Strong Tolerable
Skills Strong Values Weak Dangerous
Skills Weak Values Weak Useless
The Rationale & Purpose of
Value Orientation
VALUES

DIS-VALUES HUMAN VALUES

Envy Gratitude
Greed Humility
Jealousy Forgiveness
Anger Patience
Crookedness Transparency
Selfishness Charitable-ness
Vindictiveness Simplicity
etc. etc.
Human Values begin with one's own self --
the focus is `myself' the first person
singular.
It is `I' who has to make a choice whether
to depend continuously on external things
or become self-sufficient/autonomous
within myself.
It is `I' who have to decide whether I
should wait for the `hostile environment'
to change first or I should change, the
uncongenial environment notwithstanding.
Instruments & Ingredients
for Value Orientation
TheHuman Mind Its Two
Dimensions
a) Intellect / Reason / Logic (Objective)
b) Emotion / Feeling / Sentiment (Subjective)
Itis (b) that comes first in our life
(childhood days).
And predominance of (b) over (a)
continues throughout our life
Instruments & Ingredients
for Value Orientation
The human mind is like a monkey
that is drunk and stung by a scorpion
with a demon having entered into it.
Shorn of the images, it is restless,
with endless desires, jealous and
envious of others and controlled by
vanity and egotism.
Five Levels of Mind
Another analysis of the mind indicates that
there are five stages/levels of its functioning,
e.g
Mudha' (darkening),
Vikshipta' (scattering),
Kshipta' (gathering),
Ekagra' (one-pointed) and
Niruddha' (concentrated).
Mind generally stays at any of the first three
levels. The fourth is rare and the fifth holds
good only for super human beings (e.g. Yogis),
not for normal human beings.
