Internet and WWW
Are they just different terms pointing
out to the same concept?
Internet and WWW
The Internet is a collection of
interconnected computer networks

The worldwide web is a much larger

collection of documents or content.
Web 1.0: Content in the web
Linear transactional relationship
Individual content producers
produced documents.
Consumers followed links to these
documents and downloaded them.
10,000 editors served 500,000,000
internet users
Web 1.0: Content in the web
Objective: Provide Information
Open webpage containing content
provided by designer.
View or download information.
Minimal chances of viewer feedback
or contribution.
Search Results simply based on
keywords on webpages
Web 2.0: User generated
content
Distribution Relationship
Everyone can be a content producer
Content is distributed across the
network
Content is shared between sites
Web 2.0 was a social change rather
than a technical one.
Web 2.0: User generated
content
Objective: Share Information
Webpage created by designers plus
contribution from users in the form of
feedback and comments.
Users share information with each other.
Chances of creating Terabytes of useless
information that have no significance.
Search Results follow some Algorithm, but
still require human editing to find desired
information.
Web 3.0: The Semantic Web
A web capable of reading and understanding
content and context.
Assigning meaning to data
When a computer understands what data
means, it can do intelligent search, reasoning
and combining.
Web 3.0 creates a big collection of databases
which can be connected on demand.
Where databases are located is meaningless
Assigning meanings to
words
How Meaning is provided to
words
XML (eXtensible Markup Language): Used to describe
words
But words are nothing without Grammar
RDF(Resource Description Framework): Used to add
Grammar to words
But we need expression and logic to assign meanings to
words.
OWL (Web Ontology Language): Provides expression
and logic in order to allow reasoning.
But we also need rules to allow reasoning
SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language): Rules of logic
(uncle means brother of father or mother)
