JAPANESE RACIAL POLICY- THE LOGIC

OF CONQUEST
To view those who are in essence unequal as if they were
equal is in itself inequitable. To treat those who are unequal
unequally is to realize equality.
We should liberate the billion people of Asia by planting as
much Japanese blood as possible in Asian soil.
We should actively improve our physical capacity eugenically
by promotingmental and physical training as well as
selective marriages.

Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941

A date which will live in infamy!

Japanese naval aircraft prepare to take off from an aircraft
carrier (reportedly the Shokaku) on the morning of
December 7. Plane in the foreground is a "Zero" Fighter.
A Japanese Navy Carrier Attack Plane ("Kate") takes
off for Pearl as the ship's crewmen cheer "Banzai."
A Japanese photo taken during the aerial torpedo
attack on "Battleship Row" on the far side of Ford
Island. A torpedo has just struck USS West Virginia
(center). Also seen are (from left) Nevada, Arizona,
Tennessee, Oklahoma (torpedoed and listing)
alongside Maryland, and California.
The sunken Battleship USS West Virginia in the foreground
with the heavily damaged USS Tennessee seen behind.
A Japanese Navy Type 99 Carrier Bomber ("Val")
in action during the attack.
The terrific explosion of the Destroyer USS
Shaw when its magazine exploded after
being bombed by Japanese aircraft.
Sailors stand amid wrecked planes at the Ford
Island seaplane base, watching as the USS Shaw
explodes in the background.
Battleship Row is now a mass of smoke and flames, with the
capsized USS Oklahoma seen in the foreground. The ship
was hit by aerial torpedoes, ripping open its port side
causing it to roll over and sink, with the loss of over 400 of
her crew.
A Japanese ("Val") Bomber drops a 250
kilogram bomb during the attack.
Ford Island, looking northeasterly, with the USS California
seen listing to port after being hit by Japanese aerial
torpedoes and bombs.
Oil burning on top of the water near the
Naval Air Station.
Dousing the flames on the USS West Virginia which
survived and was rebuilt.
Sailors in a motor launch rescue a survivor from the
water alongside the West Virginia.
Burning barracks at Ford Island.
A wrecked B-17 bomber near Hangar 5 at Hickam Field.
During the raid a dozen unarmed B-17s were arriving from
California and were attacked. This bomber crash landed then
burned.
A US Navy PBY patrol bomber burning at
Kaneohe Naval Air Station, Oahu.
An American Sailor killed during the attack on
Kaneohe Naval Air Station.
A midget Japanese submarine beached at Bellows Field after the
attack. This is one of five such midget subs that attempted to
penetrate the inner harbor.

grounds of the Naval Hospital in Honolulu.
The smoldering wreckage of the USS Arizona after a bomb
penetrated the forward magazine causing massive explosions
and killing 1104 men.

I was nauseated by the smell of burning
flesh, which turned out to be my own as
I climbed up the hot ladder. A quick
glance around revealed nothing in the
darkness, but the moaning and sounds
of falling bodies told me that some of
my shipmates had succumbed to defeat
and had died in their attempt to
survive.

The days after the attack were ones of
frustration, working parties, and fear of
a Japanese invasion. The worst
experience, by far was going back
aboard ship on December 8th to remove
bodies of my shipmates. Recovering
burned and mangled bodies has left an
indelible mark on my mind that refuses
to go away.
