THE UK UNDERFLOOR HEATING MARKET

Wet & Electric UFH included

Market grown since 2009
5% of the UK heating market
78m value in 2011
Est. 90m value by 2016
Non-domestic projects
account for 51% share
Emphasis on small flats &

ENERGY REQUIREMENTS

Energy requirements of a UK home can typically come from 40-50

W/m
Average family home (120-160m ) requires 6-7kW
Optimum flow temperature for heating from heat pumps ( 35-40C)
Optimum flow temperature for cooling is 16C, possible to obtain
cooling directly from primary ground-source circuit, i.e. simple pump
(no heat pump)

Modes of heat transfer from human body

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
BASIC PRINCIPLES

Thermal Comfort / Radiant Heat

Underfloor Radiators
heating
Radiation 60 % 30 % Convection
Convection 40% 70 % Radiation

Thermal comfort
*
Since majority of the heat lost from the human body is due to Radiation, the comfort level derived from
Floor Heating is greater than by Convection, due to the heat lost from the human body being replaced
in the same way

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
BENEFITS OF UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Same comfort level at lower room temperatures > 15% to 30% potential saving in fuel costs*
Reduces wasted heat at ceiling height > lower heat load
Large heat emitter reduces heating water temperature > compatible with heat pumps / solar etc.
Vertical temperature profile close to ideal profile > increased comfort level
Even spread of heat across complete floor > high comfort level
Silent and invisible heating system > high comfort level
Air movement at a minimum > allergy friendly
No radiator grills > freedom in space design & safe
Virtually maintenance free system > no downtime
No ventilation shafts, no covers > very low security risk (prisons, public areas)

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
WHY COOLING?

- Over heating of residential buildings is even in UK climate conditions quite common for
the following reasons:
- High internal gains through people

- High internal gains through electrical equipment e.g. TVs, Computers/Laptops etc.

- High solar gains

- Higher insulation of building

- Lower air leakage rates

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
PRINCIPLES OF UNDERFLOOR COOLING

Thermal comfort of a person is determined by:

The persons activity
The persons clothes
Air temperature
Air speed
Air humidity
Surface Temperature

Heat output of the human body occurs via three main mechanisms:

RADIATION EVAPORATION CONVECTION

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
SYSTEM DESIGN

Important factors which effect the cooling output

- Floor covering

- Pipe spacing

- Pipe dimension

- Floor Construction

- System

- Heat gains

REHAU
UNDERFLOOR HEATING AND COOLING
THERMAL MASS OF EMMITERS

- Lower thermal mass

- Chip board 25 mm
- Plaster board 25 mm

- Higher thermal mass UFH system for joisted floors Chilled ceiling element

- Screed 65 mm
- Concrete 150 to 200 mm

- Typical response times

- Screed (75mm) 1 -1.5 hr/1C

- Concrete (150mm) 4 6 hr /1C Screed systems TABS systems

Typical 100-150mm pipe centres

16mm x 1.5mm RAUTHERM Universal pipe
Flow temp 16C Return temp 19C
With a surface temperature of 20C and room temperature of 26C 32W/m cooling can be
achieved.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A FLOOR COVERING WITH A LOW THERMAL RESISTANCE IS
USED TO MAXIMISE THE COOLING OUTPUT (Tile, Slate etc.)

COOLING CONTROLS

REHAU INTELLIGENT CONTROL SYSTEM -

HEATING & COOLING MODES:

Each zone controlled by a room sensor continuously compares required room temp
with actual room temp
If room temp is too low or high it signals the actuator to open the return valve and allow
warm or cold water to flow into the circuit

SET-BACK MODE:
When leaving the house or at night, systems allows internal temp to drop to a lower level
In cooling mode it allows the internal temperatures to INCREASE
Makes the system respond quickly & efficiently

REHAU
POLYMER CAN BE GREEN
ENVIRONMENTAL AND RECYCLABLE ISSUES

Lower cost to the environment for production

- No mining operations for the ore
- PEX pipe is chemically inert therefore highly resistant
to corrosion and lasts longer
- PE is abundant, created by refining operations
- Low energy cost to produce compared with copper
- No chlorine is used in production of PEX

Proven long life and durability

- Provides value: Performance vs environmental cost
- Recyclable PEX can be ground up to inert filler e.g.
inert filler in asphalt, irrigation tube etc

Other Consideration
- Quiet operation
- Dampens water hammer, reduces pressure spikes that may harm equipment and fixtures
- Does not add minerals to drinking water or to the public water system
