Pathogenesis
1. Pharyngitis: Causative agent- types 1-7
Non bacterial pharyngitis & tonsilitis
2. Pneumonia: Causative agent- types 4&7
Pneumonia in adults- primary atypical pneumonia
Young children Type 7a, serious & fatal pneumonia
3.Acute respiratory diseases (ARD): Causative agent- types 4,7 & 21,
outbreaks in military recruits.
4. Pharyngo conjuctival fever: Causative agent- types 3 and 7
Febrile pharyngitis and conjuctivitis.
5. Epidemic Keratoconjuctivitis (EKC): Causative agent- types 8,19
and 37
Epidemic industrial workers exposed to dust (shipyard eye)
6. Acute Follicular conjuctivitis: Causative agent- types 3 & 7a
Non purulent inflammation of the conjuctiva with enlargement of the
submucous lymphoid follicles & periauricular lymphnodes
7. Acute haemorrhagic cystitis in children: Causative agent- types 11
& 21.
8. Diarrhoea: Causative agent- types 40 & 41.
Enteric type adenoviruses.
Lab Diagnosis
Sample isolation of virus from throat, eye, urine or faeces
Inoculation Tissue culture
Cytopathic effects, complement fixation test with adenovirus
serum
Haemagglutination with rat and monkey erythrocytes
Typing neutralisation test
Serological diagnosis rise in antibody titre demonstarted in
paired sera
Prophylaxis
Vaccination with attenuated strains
oral administration of live virus enclosed in capsule
Adenovirus structural protein induction of neutralising
antibodies
Adenovirus Associated Virus (AAV)/Adeno satellite virus
Small icosahedral viral particles, 20-25nm diameter unable to
multiply except in cells simultaneously infected with adeno virus.
Detected by electron microscopy and complement fixation or
immuno fluorescence with specific antisera
Human origin types 1,2 & 3
Simian origin type 4
