January 2017
Learning Target

I can articulate how Guided

Reading is a critical strategy of
the Balanced Literacy
Framework.
I can explain the Essential
Elements/Components of a
Guided Reading lesson.
Expectations
Assessments
-F & P (Winter/Spring)

-Progress Monitoring
Where are you when it comes
to Guided Reading?

The Balanced Literacy Approach seeks to find an
appropriate balance of all components and elements of
literacy Instruction.

Guided Reading is...
A teaching approach designed to
help individual students learn how
to process a variety of increasingly
challenging texts with
understanding and fluency.

Elements/Components of a
Guided Reading Lesson
Lesson Pre-Work
Before Reading: Strategy Focus/ Introduction to
text
During Reading: Reading the text
After Reading: Comprehension discussion
Lesson Pre-work
Teacher analyzes student data and
plans:
Identify skill(s)/strategy based on student need

Identify leveled text based on skill/strategy

focus

Create scripted comprehension questions

Before Reading-Strategy Focus &
Introducing the Text
Learning Target: Teacher states the strategy/skill the students will use
when reading.

Front Loading: Key ideas and concepts, High Frequency Words, Trick
Words (ie: once) and vocabulary words (ie: porridge).
Scaffolds provided by this introduction will support effective
processing of the text

Introduction of text: Teacher will give an introduction Hook to

the text (similar to an book introduction given when using F & P
assessment books.)
Length and content will depend on the complexity of the text
and the readers background knowledge, experience with
text features, understanding of genre, and reading skills
During Reading - Reading the
Text
Students read the text individually and use word
solving strategies to solve unknown words while
reading.

Teacher listens to students read and uses word-

solving prompts for students who need focus on
accuracy and fluency.

As Teacher listens, he/she records observations on

note-taking form.
Fluency
What am I practicing:
Word Solving
Phrasing
Punctuation
Tone

How to practice:
Choral reading
Echo reading
Independent reading
After Reading-Discussing/Revisiting the
Text

Discussion is tied to the specific skill highlighted

in the introduction and attention is drawn
back to text evidence.

Teacher facilitates a comprehension conversation

about what students have read, using factual,
Inferential, Critical Thinking Questions.
Comprehension
Questions
Factual: Thinking Within the Text
The answer is found right in the text.
(ie: Where did the bears go when the porridge was too hot?)

Inferential: Thinking Beyond the Text

Adding up clues (text evidence, background knowledge) from one point in the
text determine something unstated.
(ie: How did the bears feel when they saw their porridge was eaten?)

Critical Thinking: Thinking About the Text

Adding up clues (text evidence, background knowledge) across multiple points
in the text to determine something unstated.
(ie: Do you think Goldilocks will come back to the bears house? Why do you
think that? Or How did the author help the reader understand how the bears
were feeling?)
Factual: Where did he sit?
Inferential: Why couldnt the men put him
together?
Critical thinking: What could his mom have
said at the beginning of the day to prevent
such a tragedy from happening?
