INTRODUCTION :

Mosquitoes can prove to be quite a nuisance, especially

while you are sleeping.
Chemical and fume based alternatives are effective, but the
emissions that are intended to be harmful for these insects
can also prove toxic to our health in the long run.
The concept that we are going to use in our circuit is related
to ultrasound.
A sound with frequency higher than 20 kHz is termed as
Ultrasound. For we, humans a sound only ranging
between 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency is audible, and any
sound with frequency below or higher than this range
wouldnt be audible for us.
ABSTRACT :
Mosquito repellents like coils, mats, liquid vaporizers, creams
are often used at various places. However they are prone to
be fatal and can cause harm to human beings. Mosquito
repellent creams and oils can cause adverse affects on the
skin like allergic reactions. Coils, mats can produce toxic
fumes when heated and cause breathing trouble.

For efficient results without any side effects, the solution is

building a simple electronic circuit with minimal components
which can produce output so as to repel the mosquitoes.

In plain words, this presentation is going to describe a simple

mosquito repellent circuit.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
COMPONENTS
Ceramic capacitor of 0.01 micro Farad
Resistor of 1 k Ohms
Resistor of 1.5 K(variable resistor of 10k, set at 1.3K with the help of
multimeter)
A 38 kHz piezo buzzer
A 9 V battery
IC DESCRIPTION:
555 TIMER IC:
555 is a very commonly used IC for
generating accurate timing pulses. It is an
8pin timer IC. In astable mode the frequency
& duty cycle are controlled by two external
resistors and a capacitor. 555 is very
commonly used for generating time delays
and pulses.
PIEZO
PiezoBUZZER:
buzzer is an electronic device commonly used to
produce sound.
Piezo buzzer is based on the inverse principle of piezo
electricity discovered in 1880 by Jacques and Pierre Curie.

It is the phenomena of generating electricity when

mechanical pressure is applied to certain materials and the
vice versa. Such materials are called piezo electric materials.
Piezo electric materials are either naturally available or
manmade.
Piezo electric materials when subjected to an alternating
electric field they stretch or compress, in accordance with
the frequency of the signal thereby producing sound.
CIRCUIT OPERATION:
Once the switch is closed, the 555 timer gets the power
supply.
initially the capacitor voltage will be zero. As the capacitor
charges through resistors Ra and Rb, at a certain point
voltage at threshold pin is less than the capacitor voltage.
This causes a change in timer output. The capacitor now
starts discharging through resistor Rb, i.e. the discharge pin
and continues so until the output voltage is back to the
original.
Thus the output signal is an oscillating signal with frequency
38 KHz, producing ultrasound at regular repetitions. On
varying the value of potentiometer.
RESULT:
The circuit generates a continuous stream of
rectangular pulses having a specified frequency. It
produces high pitch sound(a buzz) at the output
speaker which triggers the mosquitoes auditory
senses thus scaring them away. The output
frequency ranges from 31 k - 100 kHz which repel
the mosquitoes.
ADVANTAGES;
Chemical and fume based alternatives cause health problems.
Mosquito repellent solutions like coils, mats, vaporizer's
produce toxic fumes causing breathing problem.
Oils and creams can cause skin diseases.
While in this circuit, there is no harm for human being as it
produces frequency which human being cannot hear.

APPLICATIONS:

This project can be helpful in domestic area by keeping the

mosquitoes away using a high frequency sound produced
by the circuit.
CONCLUSION:

Human generations are able to hear frequency which has a

range from 20Hz to 20 KHz. All the rest frequency above this
is considered as a ultrasonic frequency.
Usually in mosquitoes ultra sound is generated by the male
ones and female one receives that one.
This circuit produces the same frequency as the male one
generates, and these creates a stress on the antennae of
the mosquito and these keep them away.
FUTURE SCOPE:
To put sensor and led lights in the circuit to detect
mosquitoes so that we will be able to know when there are
mosquitoes all around us. It is also able to prove that this
circuit works well because if the led light does not work that
means the area is safe from the mosquitoes.

we can improve by enlarging the field to repel mosquitoes so

we can use a circuit covering a large area.

In addition, this circuit is not limited to mosquitoes. if the

frequency is modified. Modifying the frequency will produce a
sound that can be used to detect any other animal not only
mosquitoes such as produce the siren or dog repellent
frequency.
