BIOCLIMATIC CHART
TOOL USED FOR ANALYSING CLIMATE OF A
PARTICULAR PLACE.
INDICATES THE ZONE OF HUMAN COMFORT.
IN BIOCLIMATIC CHART THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATIC
ELEMENTS CAN BE ASSEMBLED FROM THE SEPARATE
STUDIES.
THE CLIMATIC ELEMENTS AROUND IT ARE SHOWN BY
MEANS OF CURVES.
THESE CURVES SHOWS NATURE OF CORRECITVE
MEASURE NECESSARY TO RESTORE THE FEELING OF
COMFORT AT ANY POINT OUTSIDE THE COMFORT
ZONE.
HISTORY OF BIOCLIMATIC CHART
CREATED BY VICTOR OLGYAY.
ARCHITECT, CITY PLANNER AND
POINEER OF BIOCLIMATISM
ACCORDING TO HIM BIO-
CLIMATIC EVALUTION IS THE
STARTING POINT FOR ANY ARCHITECTURAL
DESIGN AIMING AT ENVIRONMENTAL CLIMATE
BALANCE.
CLIMATIC ELEMENTS
DRY BULB TEMPRATURE
RELATIVE HUMIDITY
WIND SPEED
SOLAR RADIATION
MEAN RADIANT TEMPRATURE- Mean radiant
temperature is simply a weighted average of
the temperatures of all surfaces in a room
(including people and equipment), with each
temperature weighted by the size of the area
at that temperature.

chart
CHART DATA-
CHART IS USED TO PLOT AVG. MAX. AND MIN.
TEMPRATAURE AND AVG. MAX. AND MIN.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY OF EACH MONTH.
RELATIVE HUMIDITY IS PLOTTED ON X AXIS
AND AIR TEMPRATURE IS PLOTTED ON Y AXIS.
THE SHADED AREA SHOWN IS COMFORT
ZONE IN SUMMER.
DOTTED AREA SHOWN IS COMFORT ZONE
FOR WINTER.
PLOTTING THE DATA
TWO POINTS ARE REQUIRED FOR EACH
MONTH.
FIRST POINT IS USED TO INDICATE MIN TEMP.
AND MAX RELATIVE HUMIDITY.
SECOND POINT IS USED TO INDICATE
MAX.TEMP. ALONG WITH MIN. REALTIVE
HUMIDITY.
EACH LINE ON CHART REPRESENTS AVG.
CHANGES IN TEMP AND HUMIDITY.
AFTER PLOTTING THE DATA
USE OF BIOCLIMATIC
CHART
BASED ON THE HUMIDITY AND DRY BULB
TEMPRATURE WE CAN LOCATE A POINT ON
THE BIOCLIAMTIC CHART.
IF THE POINT FALLS INTO COMFORT ZONE, WE
FEEL COMFORTABLE IN SHADE.
IF THE POINT FALLS OUTSIDE THE COMFORT
ZONE, CORRECTIVE MEASURES ARE NEEDED.
If the point is higher than the upper perimeter
of the comfort zone, winds are needed.
If the point lies below the perimeter of
comfort zone, heating is necessary.
If the point lies to left of the comfort zone,
either radiant heating or cooling is required.
RADIANT COOLING OR HEATING-
In radiant heating and radiant cooling,
heating or cooling of surfaces rather than air.
EVAPORATIVE COOLING-
It is a process that cools air
through the evaporation
of water.
EXAMPLE-
Dry bulb Relative NEED
temperatur humidity
e (F)
75 50% Point is in comfort zone
75 70% 280 fpm wind is required to counteract
vapor pressure.
50 56% 260 Btu/hr sun radiation
87 30% 1) 300 fpm wind or
2) Evaporative cooling

BIOCLIMATIC CHART OF NEWDELHI
Climate of New Delhi is predominantly is hot.
It has distinct cool and humid seasons.
From bioclimatic chart evaporative cooling is
desirable in April to May. Mechanical air-
conditioning is required from June to August
due to high humidity coupled with high
temperature. In September, air movement in
the form of ventilation can help in achieving
comfort. In months of November, December
and January heating is required in night.
