Raigarh profile:
o Families involved in agriculture:
o 1,88,942 (SC:15%, ST:35%, others:50%)
o Soil pattern:
o Bhatta(36%), Matasi(21%), Dorsa(22%), Kanhar(18%),
kachhar(3%)
o Agriculture Land in Use:
o 300 ha (Irrigated : 22.6%; Rain fed : 77.4%)
o Major Crops:
o Cereals : Paddy rice, Jwar, Kodo-kutki, Maize
o Pulses : Arhar, moong, Urd, Kulthi
o Oilseed : Ground nut, Soybean, Sunflower, Til, Niga
o Cropping Pattern:
o Horticulture crops like Cashew nuts and Mango, pears
and Nashpati
o Cultivation of paddy because of weather conditions and
higher assured returns

Understanding PRA & Exercise:
oParticipatory approach:
o PDA helps to reveal HH profile in a nut-shell.
o Social-Resource map with soil-crop mapping is
captured
o Seasonality, Timeline, Chapatti analysis
o Sequencing of problems and need based solutions
o Micro-level planning:
o An essential tool for VDP
o Prepared VDP for Siwahar village
Issues drinking water & VDP- Ponds deepening,
cattle wash, land segregation in its use,
productivity, higher use of soil test,
school, better collectivization measures
remuneration, health etc.
o Learning:
o Convenient for Micro level development
o Need a lot many skills in getting PRA right
o Language, perception, gender bias, issues
Wadi Development: o WADI visits
o Kudumkela, Kunkuri and Jashpur Block (Raigarh)
o Objectives:
o Increasing production & productivity in
Horticulture, thus generating employment
o Managing natural resources
o Reduction of rural poverty through credit and
grant support
o enable the communities to be partners in policy
formulation, execution of programs, improve
social & economic status.
o Learnings:
o Smooth Convergence of WADI with FPOs (Sahyog
Green Dharamjaygarh)
o Expanded horizon of CSR activities seen in WADI
development by JINDAL GROUP.
o WADI is one of our successful initiative in tribal
areas and it can be expanded to non tribal area
Wadi Development: o Learnings:
o WADIs also reduce pollution in Coal mining
dominated Raigarh district.
o Increase in family income of tribal people
o WADIs have become the base for Institutional
developments such as FPO , Village Committee
o Concerns:
o Animal attack (Elephant ) on WADIS close to
forest areas
o FPOs overdependence on NGO
o Inability in transferring Horticulture skills to
Tribals ( Do as I tell approach by NGOs )
o Convergence with state Govt departments is still
under explored( Knowledge support from KVK
,Subsidized Solar Pumps from Energy
department, Subsidised good quality plants from
horticulture etc )
o FPOs are becoming more-like another
o Visit to Kapartunga village of Sarangarh block
Watershed Development:
o Achievement:
o Increase in water holding capacity and Infiltration of soil
o Prevented soil erosion
o Pasture and vegetation development
o Increase in ground water level
o Livelihood development with focus on poor
o Agriculture Productivity enhancement
o Utilization of common property resources for common
cause and development
o Contribution in Climate change management strategies
o Key learnings:
o Marking of contour lines
o Participatory Net Planning (PNP)
o Base-line Survey
o Land Capability Classification
o Selection of water treatment process
o Technical mappings and measurements related to diff
structures
o Visits to Kudumkela, Pathalgaon villages
Financial intermediation: o SHGs
o Understanding the formation, working, saving and credit linkage
status of these SHGs
o SHGs are at nascent to matured stage (less than 3 years of age)
o Livelihood enterprise development
o Issues linkage status, records updation, less credit availability to
SHGs from banks make them look forward to MFIs like spandan
o JLG
HDFC is aggressively financing medium farmers through JLG
rather than SHG-BLP with strict repayment monitoring cell
A good number engaged in RNFS
MFI mostly going through individual financing
o KCC
Kudumkela is known for good quality of vegetables
But, only 23% coverage of KCC by RRB-Dharamjaigarh
Issues of NPA, Less staffing, and other issues
o Learnings:
o Still gap persists, MFI are filling in those imperfections
o Moneylender still there, albeit the interest rate reduced
o Visits to Bilaspur district & Kaparthunga village
Producer organization: o Seed Processing FPO:
o started from 69 farmers 3 years back
o Today 183 farmers a mix of large, medium and small farmers
o averaging around 10 crores as an annual turnover with 26000
quintals of seed production this year
o Increased bargaining power and setting the terms with buyers
o Linkages Govt. contract, appropriate credit, technical
support and collectivization of local support, advanced
agricultural practices
o Sahyog Kamdhenu Adiwasi Sahkari Samiti
Maryadit:
o Understood milk collection, testing and marketing strategies
o A good way of collectivization
o Issues of adulteration in milk by locals, competition with
middlemen as a result fluctuation in collection of milk
o Learnings:
o Ideally suited for aggregation model at the Input level, Skill
upgrdation, Technological advancement in primary produce
activities, infusion of professionalism, and marketing linkages
o Social capital, improved gender relations, deepens democracy
CSR activities: o Visits to Jindal office & places of
intervention in Raigarh
o O P Jindal Samaj Kalyan Samiti (OPJSKS),
Tamnar:
o Education, Health, Women Empowerment, Livelihood
and Sanitation area of operation in Raigarh
o Little Angel Nursery School run by SHG
o Vatsalya Kendra for women and child health care
facilities
