Starting a new model

Selecting Units and Template

There are two methods for developing a model
Using Bridge Modeler Wizard
Using Tabs given at top of program interface

Steps involved in complete modeling of a bridge

General Sequence

For Modeling and Analysis, typical sequence of using TABS is

from Left to Right
Defining New Layout Line
Layout line provides the
primary controlled
geometry for Bridge

Specify Initial Station

and Final Station

Define shape of horizontal

layout

Later on, you can easily

copy, modify or delete
layout line
Defining Lanes

Use Layout Line for

Lane definition.
Components

Three sub sections for defining components

Properties Materials, Superstructure Deck Sections and
Substructure - Bearings
Defining Frame Sections

Select/Define/Modify Materials
Define sections e.g. Columns,
Abutments, Bent Cap
Select Shapes
Specify Width and Depth
Defining Deck Section and Diaphragms
Specify Total Depth and Total
Width
User can change other
dimensions

Select Solid for concrete

bridges
Specify Thickness
Parametric Variation for Deck depth and
Bearings
Define variations in deck
depth for all spans

Define Bearings to be placed under the

girder, on the top of abutments at
bridge end
Defining Foundation springs and
abutments
You can specify an exclusive stiffness in
any direction or can remove restraint if
desired

Specify how the girder is

supported

Specify the Substructure

type and foundation
spring property
Defining Bridge Bent
Specify how the girder
is supported at the bent

Specify the number of

column supports and
Bent type

Click Modify/Show
Column Data to assign
column sections
Specify Distance and Height of
columns

See Notes in dialog box for

explanation

Specify Base supports for columns

User can also specify Moment

Releases at top of column
Defining Loads and Load patterns

Define Vehicles
Assign defined vehicles to
Vehicle class
Define PRESTRESS load pattern
Assembling all Bridge Components

Bridge Object will be based on

previously defined layout line

Specify sections for Abutments,

Bearings and diaphragms
Specify elevations of top of
abutment and bearing
Assembling all Bridge Components
Modify bents

Specify bent location and

elevation

User can also rotate bent to

any angle

In order to fix the bent to deck,

user may define new bearings
with all releases set to fixed

Convert all these definitions

to an object based model by
clicking Update button in
upper right tab.
Updating bridge structural model
There are three structural model options
Update as spline model using frame
objects
Update as area object model
Update as solid object model
Adding parametric variations to deck
span

Change total depth of span 1 from

Constant to varying based on previously
defined Parametric variations
Repeat for span 2.

Defining pre-stress tendons
Add new tendon
Assign tendon start end position
Specify load pattern as PRESTRESS
Specify tendon area and load
Specify vertical layout using Quick
start button
Defining pre-stress tendons
Dont forget to copy the defined
tendons to all girders using Copy to All
Girders button
Original tendon will be deleted
Using button, we can see the section
view and tendons variation along the
span by scrolling
Defining Moving load case
Add Vehicle class to
moving load case

Use Bridge Response

button to define what
moving load analysis
results are to be saved.
Running Analysis
User can set some load cases
to Do Not Run
Displaying Deformed Shapes
Upon completion of analysis the
program will display the deformed
shape for dead load case
Other load cases can be seen
Display panel in Home tab Dead
For PRESTRESS load case, the Load
deflected shape is upward, as Case
expected
