What We Learned:
Max Roach clearly marks the form of the
tune.
The individual sections of the form are
broken up using short motifs, which are
repeated and built upon.
Drum solos dont have to be a flurry of
notes all the time, and instead should
utilize space to make individual phrases
more impactful.
By effectively using pickups Max Roach
gives the solo a sense of forward motion
and direction.
