DEFINITION
OF
NARRATIVE TEXT

Narrative text is a kind of the text

that retell the story in the past.

The purpose or social function or

communicative target is to entertain or
to amuse the readers or listeners about
the story.
 GENERIC STRUCTURE OF
NARRATIVE TEXT
1.Orientation: the Recognition of the setting
( background of the story) : figure, time, and
place.
2 .Complication: the conflict development of the
story.
3.Resolution: the solving of the conflict
4.Evaluation: the discussion of moral values or
philosophy that can be drawn from the story.
This part exists especially in the more complex
narrative.
5. Reorientation or Coda: the change that
happened to the
 LEXICO GRAMMATICAL
FEATURES
Characters introduction : there was, once upon a
time, etc.
Past tenses : all verbs used except in direct
statements.
Mental Process: wanted, felt, find out, like, etc.

Cause and effect conjunction: so, so that, etc.

Temporal Conjunction: one evening, suddenly, then,

etc.
Action Process: came, made, washed, etc.

A fairy tale typically features such folkloric characters as
fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants or gnomes, and
usually magic or enchantments.

Legend is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by
teller and listeners to take place within human history. Typically, a
legend is a short, traditional and historicized narrative performed in a
converstional mode. Some define legend as folktale.

Narrative text, since it told a story, is dominantly
constructed in past tenses. It is logic because
every story happened in the past time.

Past Tense Used :

Simple Past

Past Perfect
Past Future Continuous

SIMPLE
PAST.....
 Simple Past Tense is the past tense of modern English . It is used to
describe events in the past. Simple past sometimes called the
Preterite.

To retell the past story (Narrative Text), we must use the past
tense. Except when we will say a direct sentence at the story.
 What Is Verb?
The verb is perhaps the most important part of the
sentence. A verb or compound verb asserts something
about the subject of the sentence and express actions,
events, or states of being. The verb or compound verb is
the critical element of the predicate of a sentence.
Example :

Dracula bites his victims on the neck.

The verb "bites" describes the action Dracula takes.

In early October, Giselle will plant twenty tulip bulbs.

Here the compound verb "will plant" describes an
action that will take place in the future.
 The simple past form:

1.AFFIRMATIVE

Subject + Verb 2 +
Object + Complement
Example of the text :
I went to Japan yesterday.
I walked to school everyday.
 2.NEGATIVE

Subject + did not/ didnt+ Verb 1 +Object + Complement

Example:
I did not go to Japan yesterday.

 Conclusion
Narrative text is a text to retell events in the past, that
purpose to entertain.
The Generic structure is Orientation, Complication, Resolution,
Evaluation, and Reorientation or coda.
The Lexico grammatical usually use, once upon a time,
suddenly, so, etc.
To make a narrative text, we must use past tense.

The formula of simple past using verb is :

(+) S+V2+O+C . (--) S+DIDNT+O+C (?)
DID+S+O+C

The Rats and The Elephants

Once upon a time there lived a group of mice under a tree in peace. However, a group of
elephants crossing the jungle unknowingly destroyed the homes of all the rats. Many of
them were even crushed to death.

Then taking of rats decided to approach the elephant's chief and request him to guide his
herd through another route. On hearing the sad story, the elephant's king apologized and
agreed to take another route. And so the lives of the rats were saved.

One day elephant-hunters came to the jungle and trapped a group of elephants in huge
nets. Then the elephant king suddenly remembered the king of the rats. He summoned
on of the elephants of his herd, which had not been trapped, to go seek help from the
king and told him about the trapped elephants.

The rat's king immediately took his entire group of rats and they cut open the nets which
had trapped the elephant's herd. The elephant herd was totally set free. They danced
with joy and thank the rats.

long time ago, there lived an old man in the Penanggungan Mountain. His name was Kiai Gede
Penanggungan. He had supernatural power. Kiai Gede Penanggungan had a beautiful daughter named
Dewi Walangangin who was not married yet. Kiai Gede Penanggungan prayed days and nights for her
daughter to have a husband. One day, a young handsome man came to his place. The name of the
man was Jaka Pandelengan. He wanted to be Kiai Gede Penanggungan's student. Kiai Gede agreed to
have Jaka as his student with one condition that he would marry her daughter. Jaka Pandelengan and
Dewi Walangangin soon got married. Kiai Gede Penanggungan taught Jaka many things.

After several years, now it was time for the couple to live separately from Kiai Gede Penanggungan.
They would move to another village. Kiai Gede gave some seeds of pari or paddy to the couple. He
asked the couple to plant the seeds. He also warned the couple not to be arrogant when they were rich.
He wanted the couple to help poor people. The couple started a new life. They planted the seed. Soon,
the seeds grew and became a lot of rice. Now the couple became very rich. The poor neighbours came
to the couple to ask for some pari seeds, but the couple refused to help them.

Kiai Gede heard about the couple's bad behavior. Soon he visited the couple. He met them when the
couple was working in the field. Kiai Gede talked to the couple. He reminded the couple not to be
arrogant, but the couple ignored him. They said nothing to Kiai Gede. Kiai Gede got very angry. Then he
said, "You two are like temples. You do not listen to me". Right after he said those words, an incredible
thing happened. Slowly, Jaka and Dewi turned into temples. Because the temples stood among the pari,
people then named them as Pari Temples.
