FACILITY LOCATION?
What is facility location?

The facility location problem, also known as location analysis or k-

center problem, is a branch of operations research and
computational geometry concerned with the optimal placement of facilities
to minimize transportation costs while considering factors like avoiding
placing hazardous materials near housing, and competitors' facilities.
A facility (plant) is a place where men, materials, money, machinery and
equipment, etc., are brought together for manufacturing product
Facility location refers to the location of service organization.
It is known as factory location in the production organization
It is a strategic decision of an organization
The success of the organization is also depends on the decision of facility
location.
Need of facility location?
Selection of the location is long term decision of the organization.
it play vital role in organization.
Selection the wrong facility location result:
Low profit margin
High cost of production
High distribution cost
Labor trouble
Closure of organization.
Facility location is importance for both new and existing organization
Facility location planning is more importance of new organization.
NEED CONTI.

Facility location planning involve three strategic decision:

o First to select a proper geographical region.
o Secondly, to select specific site within this region
o Lastly, to find the actual site.
FACTOR AFFECTING FACILITY
LOCATION
Proximity to supplier and resources
Nearness to market
Favorable labor climate
Transport facility
Power
Location of Competitor
Natural factor

FACTOR RATING TECHNIQUE

BREAK EVEN ALAYSIS
factor rating technique

The decision where to locate is based on many different types of information and
inputs. There is no single model or technique that will select the "best" site from a
group. However, techniques are available that help to organize site information
and that can be used as a starting point for comparing different locations.
In the location factor rating system, factors that are important in the
location decision are identified. Each factor is weighted from 0 to 1.00 to
prioritize the factor and reflect its importance. A subjective score is assigned
(usually between 0 and 100) to each factor based on its attractiveness
compared with other locations, and the weighted scores are summed.
Decisions typically will not be made based solely on these ratings, but they
provide a good way to organize and rank factors
Factor Rating Technique

The process of selecting a new facility location involves a series of

following steps:
1.Identify the important location factors.
2.Rate each factor according to its relative importance,i.e higher the
ratings is indicative of prominent factor.
3.Assign each location according to the merits of the location for each
factor.
4.Calculate the rating for each location by multiplying factor assigned
to each location with basic factors considered.
5.Find the sum of product calculated for each factor and select best
location having highest total score
