Why Green, Not Blue or Red ?

Green signifies
Renewal, Health
and
ENVIRONMENT.
Think about IT
Do we switch off screens and other non
essential devices at night?
Do we keep equipment clean and recycle it
when its no longer needed?
Do we buy energy efficient versions of the
devices?
Do we prefer computers to papers for our paper
work?

The answer is NO !!!!!!!!!!

Pass the message on..
Doing nothing gets nothing done!!!
What is Green IT ???
Refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT.

The study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing

of machines in an efficient, effective and economic way.
Why Green IT ?
IT has been
on an
unsustainable
path for
years.
Global carbon emissions attributable to IT have been estimated at 2% to
2.5% of world totals.
A PC with a screensaver going can use well over 100W of power, compared
with only about 10W in sleep mode.
Companies can save between $25 and $75 (or more) on power bills per PC
per year by powering down machines when they're not in use.
The average employee wastes $85 worth of printer paper and ink each year
through unnecessary printing.
If all commuters worked from home just one day a week, 5.85 billion fewer
gallons of oil would be used each year.
Although e-waste accounts for only 1 to 4 percent of municipal waste, it may
be responsible for as much as 70 percent of the heavy metals in landfills

Why must IT go green?

Because it has no other option...
Approaches to Green IT
Virtualization
Power management
Material recycling
Telecommuting
VIRTUALISATION
Abstraction of computer resources, such as the process
of running two or more logical computer systems on one
set of physical hardware.
Virtualization platforms can run across hundreds of
interconnected physical computers and storage devices,
to create an entire virtual infrastructure.
POWER MANAGEMENT
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface(ACPI):allows an
operating system to directly control the power-saving aspects of
its underlying hardware.
Undervolting: allow the user to manually adjust the voltages
supplied to the CPU, which reduces both the amount of heat
produced and electricity consumed
MATERIAL RECYCLING
Keep harmful materials such as lead, mercury, and
hexavalent chromium out of landfills.
Replace equipment that otherwise would need to be
manufactured, saving further energy and emissions.
e-waste handling
TELECOMMUTING
Also called as teleconferencing and
telepresence.
Employees enjoy flexibility in working
location and hours.
The daily commute to a central place of
work is replaced by telecommunication
links.
