Direct Patient Care
Strengths: being self-motivated, organized and efficient. Desire to
continue education and developing professionally.
Areas for improvement: time management and continuing to
educate on disease processes
0-2 year plan: become comfortable with organizational tool and
research unknown disease processes after encounters during shifts.
3-5 year plan: share knowledge of time management with nursing
students and return to school for MSN to continue education
Unit Related Leadership
Strengths: communicate well with others and have the
characteristics of a leader
Areas for improvement: delegation and the ability to ask questions
0-2 year plan: continue learning about delegation and gaining
confidence in asking questions
3-5 year plan: be proficient in delegation and teach nursing
students about it, and share knowledge gained from asking
questions
Professional Nursing Development
0-2 year plan: join the state and national chapters of the ANA as
well as the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Continue work with Sigma
Theta Tau.
3-5 year plan: Become certified as an APN and volunteer with the
American Red Cross in their disaster management program.
Leadership Book: Your 1st Year As a Nurse
Complimented strength about continuing professional
development
Discussed the benefits of joining national nursing associations,
state organizations, conferences, career fairs and finding mentors
Also suggested ways to take my nursing career to the next level,
including about the benefits of higher education
Leadership Shadowing Experience
Shadowed a charge nurse on a Step Down unit
Complimented the area of improvement for time management
Learned a lot about time management and how to be the most
efficient on a unit
Also discovered that the charge nurse role may not be one that I am
interested in for the future.
Professional Activity
Activities included: working with a homeless shelter, attending a
career fair and participating in a mass casualty training
This complimented my strengths of increasing nursing skills and
professionalism, and continued my education
These activities were great because they were all very different but
each contributed to my professional development
