PERFORMANCE OF

CROSS
FLOW HEAT
EXCHANGER
HEAT EXCHANGERS
A heat exchanger is a device that is used to
transfer thermal energy between two or more
fluids (OR) between a solid surface and a fluid
(OR) between solid particulates and a fluid,
which are at different temperatures and in
thermal contact.
How does Heat Transfer takes
place?
Heat Transfer takes place due to temperature
difference between two systems.

Heat can travel from one place to another in three

ways:
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
Convection Types

I. Natural Convection: If the fluid motion is caused

by buoyancy forces that are induced by
density differences due to the variation
of temperature in the fluid.

II. Forced Convection: If the fluid is forced to flow

over the surface by external means such
as a fan, pump, or the wind.
Principle of Heat Exchanger
The rate of heat flow at any point depends on:
Heat transfer coefficient (U)
Temperature difference between hot and cold streams.

Total heat transferred (Q) depends on:

Heat transfer surface area (A)
Heat transfer coefficient.
Average temperature difference between the streams,
strictly the log mean (LMTD)

Thus total heat transferred,

Q = U.A.LMTD
CLASSIFICATION OF HEAT EXCHANGERS

Based on flow arrangement, heat exchangers are

broadly classified into:

Parallel flow heat exchanger

Counter flow hear exchanger
Cross flow heat exchanger
Parallel flow Heat Exchanger
The hot and cold fluid flow parallel to each
other in same direction.

Flow
Temp. variation
arrangement
Counter flow Heat Exchanger
The hot and cold fluids flow parallel to each
other in opposite direction.

Flow Temp.
arrangement variation
Cross flow Heat Exchanger

The hot fluid whose temperature is to be reduced flows

perpendicular to the cold fluid.

Effectiveness of cross-flow Heat
Exchanger

It is the ratio of actual heat transfer rate to

maximum possible heat transfer rate.
