Andre Lefevere

Andre Lefevere worked in comparative

literature department in Belgium and then
in the USA at the University of Texas.
His works on translation and culture represents
a bridging point to the cultural turn.

He dismissed the painstaking comparisons

between originals and translations which do
not consider the text in its cultural environment
(Bassnett and Lefevere 1990: 11).

Waterloo Bridge

Lefevere claims that the (same) basic process of
rewriting is at work in translation(Lefevere 1992a).

Translation is the most obviously recognizable

type of rewriting, and it is potentially the most
influential because it is able to project the image
of an author and/or those works beyond the
boundaries of their culture of origin. (Lefevere 1992a:
9).

Domestication and Foreignization

What dictates the translation strategy and

the solutions to specific problems?

The ultimate receptor of a translation is

the target-language readers. The
translation must be accepted by the
target-language readers. The translator
must take into consideration of the
potential audiences expectations.
TL readers oriented
The translator must consider the culture
background of the audience.

The translator has to develop his initiative

and cater to the aesthetic taste of the
target language readers.
The theories play a dual role of theoretical
support and practical guidance.
