Main Concepts
People
Attitudes versus Behaviours
Attitudes are mainly peoples mindsets
and way of thinking.
Attitudes are formed based on
background, education, experience,
religion, genetic inheritance, etc, all mixed
together.
Behaviours are peoples physical actions
and/or verbal statements
True or False?
Behaviours are the Mutual influence
factual demonstration - Chicken and
of attitudes? Egg dilemma!!
True
Behaviours must be Behaviours

based on Attitudes all (revealed)

the time?
False Attitudes
(hidden)
Which is easier to measure?
Behaviours are objectively observed (factual)
Attitudes are subjectively judged

Which is easier to Change?

Behaviours can be changed instantaneously according to
circumstances
Attitudes takes long time to change but once changed, it continue
to influence behaviours
What BBS principally do?
BBS targets behaviour to cause quick change
in the short term (How?)

Sustains desired Behaviour (How?)

Attitude follows on the longer term and

behaviours becomes self sustainable (culture)
What is BBS programs implementation?:

It is workforce driven program ( Based on No Name, No Blame)

It focuses on Behaviour on short term basis (attitudes should
follow on long term)
It measures Safe and Unsafe behaviour (Systematic Measurement
based on principles of Sampling) and trend analysis
Behavioural ABC Analysis + Root cause analysis
Identifies actions to modify the unsafe behaviours under study
(making the safe behaviour as convenient as possible)
Uses positive reinforcement for required behaviours
Feedback provided to individuals, teams and the site to
encourage behavioural improvements
It provides means of analysis and problems solving so that
targeted safety improvements can be made
The Six Pillars of Behavioural Safety:
Awareness raising.

Root Cause Analysis.

Measurement (for continuous improvement).

Workforce Ownership
Management Commitment and Support.
What BBS is Not meant to be
Not designed to replace normal reporting
of hazards and near misses (HASP)
Not meant to replace sound safe design of
equipment and robust HSE Management
procedure and practices
Not to be used to victimize and intimidate
workforce (i.e. No name No blame)
Not a traditional safety initiative but an on-
going process

Roles and Responsibilities - Observers

Team of Observers will conduct short observation sessions (3 X

20 min/ day) logging both Safe and unsafe acts

Observers will provide individuals with instant feedback

Feedback will be: Well Done (+ve reinforcement) , in case of
safe behaviours and in case of unsafe behaviours it will be just
Why? (no name no blame)
Observation checklists will be then handed daily to the BBS
secretary to compile into statistics and trend analysis
This info will be fed into the above layer for analysis during the
weekly meeting.
Roles and Responsibilities Support Team/Analysts

Recruit and train observers

Do quality checks on observation sessions and data entry
Provide Weekly feedback to workforce through line
management
Weekly meeting to:
Conduct ABC analysis
Conduct Root cause analysis
Brainstorm effective solutions
Raise to the Mgt Team and get buy-in
Follow-up implementation
Discuss feed back to site workforce
Roles and Responsibilities Champions & Mgt

BBS - High level Summary
Measures safe and unsafe behaviours (planned
observation sessions)
Positive Reinforcement of safe behaviours (R+)
Analyse Root Causes of unsafe behaviours (ABC model)
Modify unsafe behaviours by eliminating root causes (S, C
& + Payoffs making safe behaviours convenient)
Set numerical targets for safe/unsafe behaviours progress
Comes with a set of training activities on required skills
(interpersonal communication + Root cause analysis +
Brainstorming + ABC model)
Designed and driven by workforce (Risk based checklist +
employees empowerment)
Targets behaviours on short term and attitudes on long
term (culture)
