INTRODUCTION
Paging coordination in BSC is a feature that enables the GSM/GPRS network to send a
circuit-switched (CS) paging request message to a GPRS-attached mobile station (MS), when
the mobile is in packet transfer mode.
With the introduction of the feature, the BSC performs CS paging coordination internally when
in the network operation mode II (NOM II). The BSC forwards the paging messages internally to
the appropriate PCUs, which in turn send the paging messages on the PACCH, if the MS is in
packet transfer mode.
BENEFITS
When network mode of operation is NOM II, mobile users can receive a voice call while using
data services such as file transfer, web browsing, video sharing, and mobile net meeting.
The feature allows the operator to have CS paging coordination supported without the need
for a Gs interface between the MSC and SGSN.
In a DTM supported network, this feature allows the operator to provide a wide range of
services that demand simultaneous circuit-switched and packet-switched connections.
REQUIREMENTS
The Paging coordination in BSC feature requires a valid license in the BSC. The general
requirements are:
Feature was successfully implemented and MS was able to receive voice calls while in Data Transfer
mode.
Paging coordination in BSC is a feature that enables the GSM/GPRS network to send a
circuit-switched (CS) paging request message to a GPRS-attached mobile station (MS) on the
packet associated control channel (PACCH), when the mobile is in packet transfer mode.
Before the introduction of this feature, CS calls were paged as described below:
In network operation mode I (NOM I) the core network provides CS paging coordination. The
BSC receives the paging messages from both the MSC and the SGSN. The paging messages
that are forwarded to the SGSN from the MSC through the Gs interface are received by the
BSC. If the MS is in the packet transfer mode, the BSC provides CS paging on the PACCH. If
the MS is in the packet idle mode, it is paged for CS calls on the PCH.
After the introduction of this feature, when an MS enters packet transfer mode, the PCU
informs the BSC about this. The BSC creates a database with all such MSs in the packet
transfer mode. When the BSC receives a paging request from the A interface for an MS, it
forwards the request to the MS through the PCH. In addition, it looks for the entry
corresponding to the MS in the database and if the MS is in the database, it forwards the
paging message internally to the PCU. If an entry is not found in the database, the BSC does

not send the CS paging message to PCU. dination
When the PCU receives a paging message from the BSC, it checks whether the MS is still in
packet transfer mode: if so, PCU sends the message to the MS on PACCH; otherwise it
ignores the message.
