Industry standard AES-XTS 256 required by most leading

compliance regulations such as HIPAA and FIPS
Data-at-rest design
Local key management
Flash System A9000 and FlashSystem A9000R support data at rest encryption.
Encryption for the system will require a Key Manager software solution like IBM
SKLM or other Key Manager that supports the KMIP 1.0 standard. All encryption key
transactions are managed by the Key Manager with the FlashSystem A9000/R
system, and no USB keying of individual FlashSystem 900s are required.
Key managers other than IBM SKLM are supported through the RPQ process.

Snapshots Are Changing, And For The Better

Copy-on-Write (CoW) and Redirect-on-Write (RoW) are different

Snapshot schemes
With CoW a snap of new data will prepare to overwrite a piece of
existing data in a primary LUN. The storage system will halt the write,
then copy the original piece of data to a new location at which point the
storage system allows the new data to be written to the primary LUN
(original location).
With RoW a snap of new data is simply written to a new location
leaving the primary LUN (original location) untouched. This has the
effect of significantly improving performance in snap-rich environments.

FlashCore: Advanced Flash Management
Innovative Engineering To Avoid Media Failures

IBM Enhanced ECC

IBM designed a new Error Corrector using a novel code which:
Corrects an astoundingly large number of errors
Does not rely on additional reads
Flash Conditioning (proactive voltage-level shifting)
Predictive techniques adjust internal flash settings in advance
minimizing probability of uncorrectable errors
Adaptive, self-optimizing wear-leveling (health-binning + heat-segregation)
Put the most accessed data on the healthiest blocks
Result: 9.4x improvement in lifespan over base media (flash chips)

Variable Stripe RAID (VSR) per MicroLatency modules Flash Media

IBM Corporation 2016 IBM & IBM Business Partner Use Only FlashSystem | 36
FlashCore: Variable Stripe RAID
Dynamic RAID Re-striping To Isolate & Bypass Media Failures

Failures of large capacity granularity, such as an entire flash chip or a plane or a die of a flash chip, are
isolated, reduced to the absolute minimum affected area, then bypassed.
The parity stripe containing the affected region is re-striped to no-longer contain the affected region
The remaining un-affected capacity remains in use
Such errors are "self-healing", the module will surgically cut them out and keep running
No loss in performance, usable capacity, or protection
No replacement necessary
No degraded state
No lengthy rebuild time
With VSR technology, multiple plane or chip failures do not result in lost usable capacity or
lost performance, and do not require the IBM MicroLatency module to be replaced

Variable Stripe RAID

Patented Variable Stripe RAID allows RAID stripe sizes to vary.

If one die fails in a 16-chip stripe, only the failed die is bypassed, then data and parity is
restriped across the remaining fifteen chips (some chips on rear of circuit board).
Variable Stripe RAID reduces maintenance intervals caused by Flash failures

FlashCore: Resiliency Well Beyond SSDs
Numerous Media Failures Are Easily Tolerated

5.7TB IBM MicroLatency Module has almost 8.8TB total of raw flash (64 flash chips)
If failures are distributed across the 4 controllers in a 5.7TB IBM MicroLatency Module
Can lose up to 2.29TB of flash capacity (almost 573GB per flash controller) before failing
Over a quarter of the flash on the module can fail before it needs to be replaced.
10 of the 64 flash chips can fail without any issue
When the 11th fails, the module will issue a warning, but continue to run
When the 17th chip fails, the module is failed and the system-level protection is engaged
If the failures are localized to a single controller, divide those numbers by 4...
3 chip failures on a single controller (controlling 16 flash chips) will trigger a warning
5 flash chip failures (of the 16 total) will trigger the failure

Compare this to an off the shelf SSD which can sustain approximately of a flash chip failure
before failing the entire drive!

In-Line Data Reduction Processing
Pattern Removal is a special case of deduplication. We essentially take
Data reduction methods: the hash of the data and compare that to the hash of known patterns. If
8KB pattern detection a match is found, we can use that hash to reference the data.

Deduplication Mechanism

Data reduction is global (system wide) and always on

Users written data is split in to constant sized chunks, 8KB in size
A fingerprint (SHA-1 hash) is calculate for each chunk
Data reduction algorithm searches for existing fingerprints:
Own segment
Other active segments
Short Term database
Long Term database
If fingerprint is found a reference to the existing chunk is created, otherwise the chunk is
stored as-is, as a new pattern

Deduplication engine creates logical objects called segments, 16MB in size
