Blending is taking the
separate sounds and
combining them together
to make a word
Join sound of phonemes
into words
WHAT IS SEGMENTING?
Segmenting is the
ability to hear a word
and identify the
individual sounds that
make up that word
Break up the sound

WHY DO WE TEACH BLENDING?
Teacher must teach
blending so that the pupils
can blend any words even
though the words are new
to them.
Read without teachers
guidance.

SEGMENTING?
To develop writing skills
In order to write words,
students must :
break the word down into

its component sounds


Select the letters that

represent these sounds


HOW TO TEACH BLENDING?
Blending approaches:
1. Syllable by syllable
2. Phoneme by phoneme
3. On set and rime
4. Body coda
1. SYLLABLE BY SYLLABLE
Examples:

/mo/ /ther/ = mother
/pen/ /cil/ = pencil
/ta/ /ble/ = table
/mon/ /key/ = monkey
/car/ /pen/ /ter/ = carpenter
