DEFINATION
Ventilation is mainly used to controlindoor air qualityby diluting and displacing indoor
pollutants. it can also be used for purposes ofthermal comfortor dehumidification.
Ventilation helps in maintaining the temperature and humidity within an acceptable
range.
It supply fresh air to meet the respiratory needs of the occupants.
VENTILATIO
N

Mechanical Natural
ventilation ventilation
uses fans to drive the flow passive flow of outside
of outside air into a building air into a building
through planned
openings (such as
louvers, doors, and
windows)
NATURAL VENTILATION
Natural ventilation is the process of
supplying and removing air through an
indoor space by natural means.
It uses outdoor air flow caused by
pressure differences between the
building and its surrounding to
provide ventilation and space cooling.
A building with good natural
ventilation through windows, doors,
and other ventilation openings
requires little assistance from
mechanical ventilation.
TYPES OF NATURAL
VENTILATION
WIND DRIVEN VENTILATION

wind hits the windward wall

causing a direct positive
pressure.

The wind moves around the

building and leaves the leeward
wall with a negative pressure

If there are any openings, fresh

air will rush in the windward wall
opening and exit the leeward wall
opening to balance pressure
Stack Ventilation
Stack ventilationuses temperature differences to move air.
Hot air rises because it is lower pressure. For this reason, it is
sometimes called buoyancy ventilation.
cool air is sucked in
through low inlet
openings

hotter exhaust air escapes

through high outlet
openings.
To design for these effects, the most
important consideration is to have a large
difference in height between air inlets and
outlets. The bigger the difference, the
better.
Towers and chimneys can be useful to carry
MECHANICAL VENTILATION
A pressure system, in which 'fresh'
outside air is blown into thebuildingby
inlet fans, creating a higher internal
pressure than the outside air.
A circulation system such as a ceiling
fan, which creates internal air
movement, but does not introduce
'fresh' air.
Demand- DCV is a control method that modulates the
Controlled volume exchange of fresh or outside air into
an enclosed space by mechanical air
Ventilation conditioning equipment.
(DCV)

Personalized Personalized ventilation is an air distribution

strategy that allows individuals to control the
Ventilation amount of ventilation received

Local exhaust ventilation addresses the issue

of avoiding the contamination of indoor air by
Local Exhaust specific high-emission source by capturing
System airborne contaminants before they are spread
into the environment.
Task ventilation
Airflow made available to individual
users to be directed where it is most
needed in a specific work space is a
type of mechanical ventilation used
in some office buildings and other
spaces. It does require extensive
duct work, making the system more
complex and potentially expensive.
ADVANTAGES OF VENTILATION
1. Control impurities
A good ventilation system will help expel a build up of pollutants, bacteria, moisture and nasty
whiffs such as body odour. If the room is not properly ventilated there will be excessive quantity of
carbon dioxide in the air, difficulty in breathing. When the amount of carbon dioxide by volume is
6%, man losses consciousness when it reaches 10%, carbon dioxide should be 0.6%.

2. Air regulation
Unless you have a ventilation system in place, you have no control of the air flow in a building. Too
much fresh air can mean costly energy bills, which is why good ventilation makes perfect sense in
many ways.

3. Stop condensation
Condensation can lead to mould and rotten surfaces. Damp conditions and condensation can cause
health issues such as allergic reactions and respiratory problems for many people. Good ventilation
will help reduce these risks.

4. Reduce temperatures
When lots of people are in confined space, the environment can become hot and stuffy. A ventilated
room will instantly be more comfortable - making for a more productive workplace.

5. Health benefits
Indoor air pollution coupled with bad ventilation can lead to a number of health problems including
headaches, allergies, asthma, rashes and sinusitis. All of which can be avoided with the installation
of a good ventilation system. It is required to prevent suffocation.
DISADVANTAGE
Cross-contamination occurs when pressure differences arise, forcing potentially contaminated air from
one zone to an uncontaminated zone. This often involves undesired odors

In hot, humid climates, unconditioned ventilation air will deliver approximately one pound of water each
day .This is a great deal of moisture, and it can create serious indoor moisture and mold problems.

Ventilation efficiency is determined by design and layout, and is dependent upon placement and proximity
of diffusers and return air outlets. If they are located closely together, supply air may mix with stale air,
decreasing efficiency of the HVAC system, and creating air quality problems.

System imbalances occur when components of the HVAC system are improperly adjusted or installed,
and can create pressure differences .

Entrainment of contaminated outside air through intake flows will result in indoor air contamination. There
are a variety of contaminated air sources, ranging from industrial effluent to VOCs put off by nearby
construction work.
