WHAT IS BRAKE?
A BRAKE IS A MECHANICAL DEVICE WHICH INHIBITS MOTION.

BRAKES ARE ACTUALLY ENERGY CONVERSION DEVICES, WHICH CONVERT THE KINETIC
ENERGY (MOMENTUM) OF YOUR VEHICLE INTO THERMAL ENERGY (HEAT).

WHEN YOU STEP ON THE BRAKES, YOU COMMAND A STOPPING FORCE TEN TIMES AS
POWERFUL
AS THE FORCE THAT PUTS THE CAR IN MOTION
WORKING OF BRAKES

ACTUALLY BRAKES USE FRICTION OF BRAKE SHOES AND DRUMS TO CONVERT


KINETIC ENERGY DEVELOPED BY THE VEHICLE INTO HEAT ENERGY.

WHEN WE APPLY BRAKES, THE PADS OR SHOES THAT PRESS AGAINST THE BRAKEDRUMS OR
ROTOR CONVERT KINETIC ENERGY INTO THERMAL ENERGY VIA FRICTION.

THUS BRAKES ARE ESSENTIALLY A MECHANISM TO CHANGE ENERGY TYPES

HYDRAULICS IS THE USE OF A LIQUID UNDER PRESSURE TO

APPLIED FORCE.
THE PRESSURE ON A LIQUID IS CALLED HYRAULIC
PRESSURE.
AND THE BRAKES WHICH ARE OPERATED BY MEANS
OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE ARE CALLED HYDRAULIC
BRAKES.
THESE BRAKES ARE BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE OF
PASCALS LAW.

CONFINED LIQUID IS TRANSMITTED
UNDIMINISHED IN ALL DIRECTIONS
THROUGHOUT THE LIQUID.
MASTER CYLINDER

THE FUNCTION OF A MASTER CYLINDER IS TO CONVERT MECHANICAL FORCE FROM THE


BRAKE PEDAL, POWER
BOOSTER AND PUSH ROD INTO HYDRAULIC PRESSURE. HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IN THIS CASE
IS CREATED BY APPLYING
MECHANICAL FORCE TO BRAKE FLUID.

MASTER CYLINDERS CONTAIN PISTONS, PISTON SEALS, RETURN SPRINGS AND INTERNAL
BRAKE FLUID PORTS. THEY ALSO HAVE A FLUID RESERVOIR THAT MAY EITHER BE AN
INTEGRAL PART OF THE UNIT OR REMOTELY MOUNTED.
DISC BRAKES

IN A DISC BRAKE, THE FLUID FROM THE


MASTER CYLINDER IS FORCED INTO A
CALIPER WHERE IT PRESSES AGAINST A
PISTON.

THE PISTON IN TURN SQUEEZES TWO


BRAKE PADS AGAINST THE DISC (ROTOR),
WHICH IS ATTACHED TO WHEEL, FORCING
IT TO SLOW DOWN OR STOP.
DRUM BRAKES

DRUM BRAKES WORK ON THE SAME PRINCIPLE AS THE


DISC BRAKES.
SHOES PRESS AGAINST A ROTATING SURFACE.
IN THIS SYSTEM THAT SURFACE IS CALLED A DRUM.
DRUM BRAKE ALSO HAS AN ADJUSTER MECHANISM, AN
EMERGENCY BRAKE MECHANISM AND LOTS OF SPRINGS.
THE SHOES ARE PULLED AWAY FROM THE DRUM BY THE
SPRINGS WHEN THE BRAKES ARE RELEASED.
ABS BRAKING

AN ANTI-LOCKBRAKING SYSTEM(ABS) IS AN
AUTOMOBILE SAFETYSYSTEMTHAT ALLOWS
THE WHEELS ON A MOTOR VEHICLE TO
MAINTAIN TRACTIVE CONTACT WITH THE ROAD
SURFACE ACCORDING TO DRIVER INPUTS
WHILEBRAKING, PREVENTING THE WHEELS
FROM LOCKING UP (CEASING ROTATION) AND
AVOIDING UNCONTROLLED SKIDDING.

AN AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A MASTER CYLINDER


CONNECTED HYDRAULICALLY
THROUGH LINES TO DISC AND DRUM BRAKE UNITS THAT STOP THE
WHEELS.
A HYDRAULIC OR VACUUM POWER ASSIST IS USED ON MOST CARS TO
DECREASE THE BRAKING EFFORT
REQUIRED FROM THE DRIVER.
A MECHANICAL BRAKE, OPERATED BY LEVERS AND CABLES, IS USED
FOR PARKING.
