Principles of Design

By Khush

1
Rhythm

2
Picture 1
This is a 3d drawing of a hand using lines.
Because the lines are regularly repeated and theres a
fixed amount of space between
the lines, the image looks very
smooth and visually appealing to
the eye.
It also appears that hand in
3D when it is actually not.

3
Picture 2
In this picture, through rhythm, texture is created

Lines are repeated with

consistency - the design and
the style is repeated.
It appears that everything
flows smoothly.

4
Movement
5
Picture 1
This is a time lapse of the night sky.
Movement is shown through lines.
Many lines, side by side make the viewers
eyes move along a path.
The lines are the paths
that the stars moved on in
the picture

6
Picture 2
The picture of Niagara Falls shows water falling
and it creates a blurry image.
The blurry image
indicates that theres
movement.
The different water
color also shows
movement

7
Formal Balance

8
Picture 1
When this picture of
Taj Mahal is split in
the middle, both sides
appear the same.
The picture is
symmetrical.
9
Picture 2
The picture will appear identical if a line is put
through the middle.
The circle will be divided in
two and each semi circle will
have a part of another semi
circle beside it, making the
two sides appear identical.

11
Picture 1
In this photo, contrast is evident through a bright
yellow flower on a light blue background.
This makes the positive space (flower) stand out
from the background.
Having contrast makes it
more interesting and
visually appealing.

12
Picture 2
There is great contrast in this picture as the black
background is so much darker than the white circle in
the middle and the light turquoise circles around it.
The branches at the top and
bottom of the picture also create
contrast because the thin black
branches stand out against the
very light-toned background circle.

13
Informal
Balance
14
Picture 1
When split down the middle,
the both sides will not
appear the same.
The picture is
asymmetrical.
15
Picture 2
Even though there is equal
amount of weight on both
sides (men), the photo
isnt symmetrical.
When the picture is cut in
the middle, the sides
wont be the same.
16
Radial
Balance
17
Picture 1
When we look at this photo, we
automatically start in the center and
make our way outwards.
The focal point is very
clear as everything seems
to come from the center.

18
Picture 2
The eye focuses more on the center
because of radial balance
We look at the center first
and then the other parts of
the photo.

19
Emphasis

20
Picture 1
In this picture, there are many white
and empty photo frames scattered
around.
The emphasis is on the
grey photo frame which has
a colorful photo inside
21
Picture 2
This photo is an example of emphasis because
main two colors used in this painting are dark
blue for the background and white for the cage
and the bird.
The key hanging from the door
of the cage is red and it draws
attention as it is the only thing
red - the rest is white and blue.

22
Simplicity

23
Picture 1
At first glance, only the black silhouette of the tree is seen
But looking at the image carefully, you see that there is
more to the image than just the tree.
In the white space surrounding the black tree, there is a
lion & a gorilla, sort of hidden in the photo
The leaves falling off the tree and the
trunk are positioned in such a way that
they look like they are a part of the
animals as well as the tree.

24
Picture 2
In this photo, there are two letters, I and b.
The image is very complex to look at as the
positive and negative space isnt very different
and clear.
The mind figures out what the
image says by digging deeper
into the image.

25
Proportion

26
Picture 1
Proportion is shown through perspective. It looks like the
man is blowing away tiny people from his hand.
But in reality, all the people are the same normal size.
The guy is standing very far away
from those people and from the
distance, they appear small.
He is posing in such a way that you
cant tell that the people are not on
this hand but far away.

27
Picture 2
This is another example of proportion through
perspective.
It appears that the girl is so tiny
that she fits in a human hand.
But in reality, both are the same size
This is because the hand is closer
to the camera lens than the girl.

28
Space
29
Picture 1
The negative space and the positive space are sort of
mixed. In two different parts of the photo, the negative
and the positive space are different.
For the first half of the photo, the
negative space is the white part and the
positive space is the black part.
But in the lower half of the picture,
white is the positive space and black is
the negative space.

30
Picture 2
In this photo, the blank space in the middle is the
positive space.
The negative space consists of the red
and pink swirls around the heart.
The melted crayon lines fill the outside
of the heart shape, providing enough
negative space for the viewers eyes to
see the shape of the heart inside.

31
Unity
32
Picture 1
In this picture, there are many
different pieces working together to
make the final piece - the face of a
girl.
Each piece is different and has no
meaning on its own but when all the
pieces come together, they create a
meaningful picture. Each piece is
important to final product.

33
Picture 2
In this example of unity, the heart is made up of many
numbers and mathematical symbols.
It seems that each and every number
and symbol belongs to this particular
photo and has a place where it fits in.
Each component of the photo is
important to the entire piece and
without it, the work wouldnt be
completed.

34
Variet
y
35
Picture 1
In this photo, there are
many different pictures
that make up the final
picture of a lion.

The creator has used a

variety of pictures to
make a final picture.

36
Picture 2
Even though this is abstract,
there is a variety-variety of
shapes, sizes and colors etc.
There are many different
designs, techniques, colors,
and shapes used to make this
abstract piece of art.
