SHEAR AND MOMENT

IN BEAMS
What Do we Call
these Members ?
Beams
Beam Types
Beams are Different in the
way they are Supported to
the Ground
Fixed
Hinged (Pinned)
Roller

Fixed (Not allowing any motions)

Hinged (Pinned) (Only allowing Rotation)
Roller (only allowing axial motion)
Their Reactions

Fixed
Hinged (Pinned)
Roller
Their Loads
Due To These External Loads
Some
Internal Reactions
are Induced
at
EACH Section
These Internal Reactions
of Shear Force (SF)
and Bending Moment (BM)
are Varying
along the Beams length (L)
These Variation in
SF and BM
are Graphed or Plotted
in the Form of
A Distribution or Diagrams

>> SFD and BMD

How one can get
SF and BM
at
Each Section
along
the Beam as f(x) ?
Static Equilibrium
Equations
In any Direction (x, y and z)
And Along any axes (x-axis,
y-axis and z-axis)
Steps:
Loaded Beam (Given)
Beam FBD (find Reactions)
Sections at different regions
(apply Static Equilibrium)
The Sign
Convention for +ive
For BM( Funny Face)

For SF (Left Up Right Down)

The Rule
without Details

The change in BM between two points

is EQUAL to the AREA of the SF diagram
between the same two points
WORKED EXAMPLE (1)
For the simply supported loaded beam shown in
figure below, Determine the SFD and BMD.

19
Steps to solve

1. Find the reaction (with check)

2. Divide the beam into intervals according to loads
and supports free body diagram
3. Write down equations of force & moments for
each interval (with check)
4. Draw the shear force diagram and bending
moment diagram (S.F.D, B.M.D) (with check)
5. Find the max S.F and max B.M
SOLUTION:
Applying these Steps, .

21
WORKED EXAMPLE (2)
For the resultant SFD and BMD, determine the
maximum Bending Stress and its location, if
it has a rectangular cross-section of 240
width x 460 depth mm.

22
SOLUTION:
From the plotted BMD, the maximum bending moment is
at section C, of Mc= 48 KN-m

Where:
M = 48 KN-m
ymax = 460/2 = 230 mm
