What is geotechnical engineering ?
Geotechnical engineering is branch of of civil
engineering concerned with the engineering
behaviour of earth.
This branch is related to soil mechanics.
IN GENERAL

Geotechnical engineering invovles the application of

soil and rock mechanics as engineering geology to
solve the engineering problems
such as design of foundations slopes , excavation,
dams ,tunnels and other civil engineering projects.
WHAT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER DO ?
In conjuction with developing
private and public engineering
projects a geotechnical engineer
will work to ensure that it will also
keep the integrity of the earth and
the physical environment.
IN GENERAL
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS
1: Estimate the magnitud and location of the loads to
be supported .
2:Develop an investigation plan to explore the sub
surface.
3:Determine necessary soil parameters through field
and lab testing.
4: Design the foundation in the safest and most
economical manner.
SOME BIGGEST PROJECTS OF
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
GOLDEN GATE
BRIDGE

Cost : 1 billion $
Location : san francisco
Made in: 1937
Petronas Towers
Cost : 1.6 billion $

Location : kuala
lumpur

BRANCHES OF
GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING
Geotechnical engineering is divided into many
branches hich are decribed below:

1: SOIL MECHANICS
2:ROCK MECHANICS
3: FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
4: GEOLOGIC ENGINEERING
5: GEOTECHNICAL EARTH QUAKE
ENGINEERING
1: SOIL MECHANICS
In geotechnical engineering soil are
considered a three phase material
composed of rock or mineral partical
water and air the voids of a soil, the
space in between mineral particals
contain th water and air.
FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
A building foundation
transmits the loads from
buildings and other structures
to earth , geotechnical design
foundations based on the
structure and properties.
GEOLOGY ENGINEERING

Geology engineering is also branch of

geotechnical engineering in which
engineers investigate in the areas of
soil and rock and this branch is
applied on civil engineering ,
minning and petroleum.
GEOTECHNICAL EARTH QUAKE
ENGINEERING
Geotechnical earth quake
engineering can be defined as that
sub speciallity with the field of
geotechnical engineering which
deals with the design and
costruction of projects in order to
resist the effects of earth quake.

IMPORTANCE OF
GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING
IMPORTANCE OF GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING

Because all construction take place

in or on ground , geotechnical
engineering plays an important
role in all civil engineering projects.
The need to investigate the
ground is of vital importance
before any construction work take
place and geotechnical engineer do
that with that manner we know
what is importance of geotechnical
engineering.
IN GENERAL
Geotechnical engineering plays
vital role in the design and
construction of nations civil
engineering infrastructure against
natural forces as well as in its
maintanance and rehabilitation.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
INVESTIGATIONS

Geotechnical engineer perform

geotechnical investigations to obtain
information on physical properties
of soil and rock underlying a site to
design earth works and foundations
for proposed structures.
TOPIC
APPLICATIONS
OF GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING.
APPLICATIONS OF GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Geotechnical engineering is applied in

designing and constructing any
structure forced from ,on or with earth
materials including designing the
foundations of structure to transfer
building loads to underlying ground ,
retaining walls .
To hold stock soil in vertical cuts
into a slope face for example during
road construction or to calculate
the safe slope angle of an
embarkment or cutting or to
calculate the loads on tunnel
through soil or rock.
GEOTECHICAL ENGINEERING
Geotechnical engineering is
not just about buidings but it is
also related to COASTEL
ENGINEERING and OCEAN
ENGINERING.
COASTEL ENGINEERING

Coastel engineering can involve design and

construction of wharves , jatties .

OCEAN ENGINEERING

Ocean engineering can involve foundation and anchor

systems of off shore structures such as oil platforms .

HISTORY OF
GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERING
Modern geotechnical engineering is a
development of second half of the
twenth century building on work of
karl tarzaghi who expounded the
philosophy of soil mechanics in 1920
which of soil mechanics in 1920 which
is branch of geo_ tech engineering.
In true engineering terms the
understanding of geotechnical
engineering as it is known today began
early in the 18th century for years the art
of geotechnical engineering was based
on only past experiences through a
succession of experimentation without
any real scientific character.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
AFTER 1927
In 1925 karl tarzaghi gave birth to new era the
development of soil mechanics , karl tarzaghi is
known as the founder of modern soil mechanics and
rightfully so the first confernce of intrnational society
of soil mechanics and foundation engineering was
held at harvard university in 1936 with karl tarzagi.
In this confrence terzaghi brought
papers to confference covering a
wide range of topics , such as shear
strengh , effective stress , elastic
stress istribution , frost action ,
expansive elay soil dynaics and
earth quake.
This was the revolution in
gotechnical engineering .
