of Commerce, now
City Hall of
Craiova. Designed
by architect John
Mincu, is finished
in 1916. The
building has a rich
interior decorated
with stucco,
Venetian mosaics
and wrought iron
grill.
NATIONAL THEATER "Marin Sorescu"

The National Theatre Marin Sorescu of Craiova, founded in 1850, occupies a


special place in the history of the Romanian theatre. This theater is the first in
Eastern Europe which joined the European Theater Convention.

Craiova was founded in 1904 and it was
recognized in 1947 by royal decree.

MONASTERY
COSUNA

The oldest building - Craiova area - which has been preserved, certified as such, is the
Monastery Cosuna. It falls into the category of religious buildings-monuments in the
Romanian Country. An old mapping maintains that the monastery was built in 1483.

Banie House is the oldest building in town,
dating from 1699.
Restored by Constantin Brancoveanu in
the architectural style carrying his name,
Banie House has two floors, with rooms
with brick vaults downstairs, with bedroom
and balcony upstairs.
This is the place where the Divan of
Department of Natural Sciences Craiova used to meet.
UNIVERSITY OF CRAIOVA

The former Palace of Justice (now the headquarters of the University) was
designed in 1890 by architect John Socolescu.
The edifice is an example of neoclassicism in architecture.

A special sight in Craiova is represented by `Nicolae Romanescu` Park, with its


picturesque character. Unique in Romania, this valuable architectural monument
is also one of the most interesting accomplishments of its kind in Europe.
