Engine Block
Main body of the engine

Camshaft is located in the cylinder block

Made of cast iron:

Thick block side walls provide lower vibrations and reduced operating
noise
Engine weight is not important in off-road engines
With cast iron oil sump the engine is part of the machine frame (in
tractor use)

Cylinder support
Cylinder liners are supported at the middle:
low distortion means low blow-by
vibration free piston ring operation
no cavitation problem (typical in wet liner construction)
superior service life
low oil consumption means low emissions
effective cooling at the top of the liners

80% coolant flows around the top

20% coolant flow to bottom

Cylinder Liners
The seal between the liner lower part and the cylinder block is
achieved by three o-rings, which are fitted in grooves in the liner.

There are three o-rings

Two upper ones are black coloured and work against the coolant
The lowest one is green coloured and works against the oil.
Always use soap to lubricate o-rings before fitting them, never oil.

The upper part is sealed by the cylinder head gasket

Cylinder liner installation
Always when fitting liners ensure that the height of liner above the cylinder
block surface is 0.03-0.08 mm.

The height difference between cylinder liners under the same cylinder head
must not exceed 0.02 mm, nor must an intermediate cylinder liner lie lower
than an outer one.
If a liner is too low, a liner with a higher flange can be fitted.

Cylinder Head
Four valves per cylinder
25% better gas exchange
Higher power density
Higher start up torque
Stem seals in inlet and exhaust valves
Improved oil control
Injector vertically in centre position
Accurate and homogenous mixing of fuel and air
2% better SFC
Lower NOx and PM emissions
Steel laminated head gasket

Valve clearance 0.35 mm Hot or cold

Valve Assembly

The camshaft is located in the cylinder block

Cam sensor reads from the gear

Gear is keyed and secured with a nut

Valve clearances are all: 0.35 mm

Too big clearance will cause smoking, lack of
power, etc
Too small clearance can damage the engine

Crank mechanism
Crankshaft
Induction hardened on the bearing and
sealing surfaces
Possible to grind journals four times
without a new heat treatment

Gears are press fitted

The crankshaft thrust washers are

integrated with the rearmost main bearing

2014 AGCO Corporation

Crankshaft seal
The front end of the crankshaft has a conical surface for the hub of
the polygroove belt pulley. An oil deflector ring is fitted between the
hub and gear wheel

If the crankshaft is worn at the sealing location, a 2 mm spacer ring

can be fitted behind the oil seal

Fit rear end seal dry, do not use oil

Dampers
44 and 49 AWI Engines use a rubber damper

66 and larger AWI Engines use a viscose damper

Inside the damper there is a housing filled with stiff silicone oil
Even a small dent makes the vibration damper inoperative.
If the damper is damaged or dented, then it should be replaced

1. Housing
2. Damper mass
3. Liquid cavity
4. Bushing

Piston
The piston is made of an eutectic aluminium alloy

Combustion chamber is in the upper face of the piston

Graphite coating to ensure correct running in

2014 AGCO Corporation

Piston Rings
The piston has three rings
The upper chromium coated ring has asymmetrical barrel face and
the ring groove is reinforced with cast iron insert
The middle ring has a taper face
The oil control ring is spring loaded and it has a two-stage,
chromed scraping edge

The three ring pistons provide excellent combustion pressure,

sealing and cylinder liner oil control

Connecting Rods
The forged con rod has an I-form section

The big end of con rod is fracture-split

Very round
Even clearance of bearings
Thicker and more even film of oil
The bearing cap is secured by two special torx bolts (use once only)

The small end is wedge shaped with press fit bushing to piston pin

The con rods are divided in weight classes by 20 g difference. A letter is stamped
to indicate weight class

All rods in the same engine must be of same weight class, max permitted weight
difference is 20 g
