Carnevale
 LA STORIA
Carnevale has roots in pagan festivals and traditions
and, as it is often the case, was adapted to fit into the
Catholic calendar: it appears that the time of Carnival
partly originated from the ancient Roman cult of the
Saturnalia, pagan rites of fertility which were
celebrated in honor of the god Saturn. Saturnalia were
wild celebrations where even disguise was allowed.
Because of different moral codes entering common
social habits, Carnivals were modified substantially
since the early centuries of Christianity to diminish
their magical and ritualistic aspects, although the
goliardic side of the celebration was usually accepted
by the clergy with relative ease.
